Mowing of Public Green Areas Resumes in Debrecen After One Month
One month has passed since the municipality of Debrecen temporarily suspended the mowing of public grassed areas in May. This step was necessary due to a winter with little precipitation, an almost rainless March, and one of the driest Aprils in the past 125 years. With this measure, the city also joined the No‑Mow May movement, announced by László Gajdos, Minister for the Living Environment.
“If we suspend intense mowing of these surfaces, grass and lawn vegetation become much more resistant to drying out. During this period, they can ripen their seeds and shed them, enriching the soil’s seed reserves, while the roots and base of the vegetation strengthen. As a result, the grass becomes greener, denser, and more resilient to summer heatwaves. This method is best for sown lawns that are not prone to weed infestation,” emphasised Orsolya Hamecz, head of the Green Aeras Department.
Specialists are now once again at work as the grass will be cut in all public areas of Debrecen over the coming weeks. At the same time, the local authority recommends that residents consider mowing less frequently where possible, as this can help preserve soil moisture and protect local wildlife.
In the more frequented tourist areas and on irrigated surfaces, mowing in Debrecen takes place weekly or fortnightly, meaning that a total of around HUF 5 million square metres of lawn is maintained. Although some rainfall has arrived this week, it is still far from compensating for the months‑long lack of precipitation.
