Searching for Debrecen’s Most Beautiful Kitchen Gardens

The Municipality of Debrecen has joined the national program “The Most Beautiful Kitchen Gardens” – Hungary’s Most Beautiful Kitchen Gardens.

Applications are welcome from all individuals and communities with kitchen gardens. The deadline for submitting garden entries is July 15, 2026.

The program aims to recognize the work of gardening enthusiasts and, in doing so, encourage the public to create and tend a kitchen garden in their own yard or garden—or in those of their relatives or friends—and to grow as many vegetables, fruits, herbs, and medicinal plants as possible for themselves and their families.

The theme of the 2026 program is “The Year of Organic Products.” As part of this, the organizers are interested in learning what commercially available organic products growers use to control pests and improve soil condition and crop quality.

Entries may include kitchen gardens on privately owned or leased land, as well as those on balconies. Entrants may compete in several categories, including mini-gardens, standard gardens, community gardens, and enclosed gardens, among others. A garden owner may enter multiple gardens; in this case, a separate entry form must be completed for each garden.

The submitted gardens will be evaluated by a panel of experts. The entry requirements, detailed information, and the entry form are available here.
