I really enjoyed visiting Debrecen Reformed College as well and I was amazed by its rich history and architecture. Established in 1538, the college is a national monument and showcases the history of the Reformed Church in the Trans-Tisza Region. The library houses over 600,000 volumes and the Csokonai Room and the Oratory are also worth exploring, as they served as Hungary’s National Assembly in 1849. It’s a great way to immerse myself in the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Holló László Memorial Museum

I also recently paid a visit to the museum dedicated to László Holló (1887-1976), located in the painter’s former home. If you’re a history enthusiast, the Déri Museum in Debrecen is a must-visit. Housed in a stunning Neo-Baroque building, it showcases a diverse collection of artifacts and artworks from various periods and genres. The museum is famous for being the guardian of Mihály Munkácsy’s masterpieces, including the awe-inspiring Christ Trilogy, comprising the first painting, “Christ Before Pilate,” created in 1882, followed by “Golgotha” in 1884, and completed with “Ecce Homo” in 1896. Exploring Debrecen’s Jewish Heritage

I recently explored Debrecen’s rich Jewish heritage, which includes historic synagogues and cultural landmarks. One of the highlights is the Orthodox Synagogue on Pásti Street, built in the early 1880s. It now serves as a tourist and cultural center, providing valuable insights into the community’s history and traditions. Adjacent to the synagogue is a moving Holocaust memorial honoring over six thousand local Jews who perished during that time. Another significant site is the “Status Quo Ante” Synagogue on Kápolnás Street, which was constructed in 1909 and shares its grounds with the former Jewish High School, now a lively Youth Center. The Beit Hamidrash, dating back to the 1910s, hosts daily sermons and religious gatherings, keeping the spirit of tradition alive. Additionally, there’s the Orthodox Mikvah nestled in the basement of the synagogue on Pásti Street, which is set to be restored as a kosher winery and exhibition area. The Kápolnási Synagogue, built between 1909-1910, has recently undergone renovation and continues to be a place of worship and cultural events.
