Northern Bypass, Lane Expansion, and Road Conditions Discussed at Public Forum Held in Józsa
The most important objective of the planned transport developments in Józsa is to significantly reduce through traffic in the district and thereby improve residents’ quality of life, as stated at Wednesday’s public forum in Józsa. During the 3.5-hour event, Mayor László Papp, local councillors and transport experts responded to numerous questions and suggestions. Among the topics discussed were DKV service frequencies and cycle paths.
There is constant traffic with high vehicle volumes along Main Road 35 in Józsa not only due to the district’s growing population, which has now reached 13,000 residents, but also because of the substantial amount of through traffic. Among the city’s plans for this year are the preparations for two state road development projects aimed at improving transport conditions in the district. One is the widening of Main Road 35 to four lanes between Józsa and Main Road 354. The other is the northern Józsa bypass, which would divert through traffic arriving from Hajdúböszörmény directly to the motorway.
At Wednesday evening’s public forum, Mayor László Papp said that the municipality considers construction of the bypass to be the higher priority and will therefore recommend this option to the relevant ministry. “Regardless of how much we widen the roads or reconstruct the junctions, they will still become congested and filled with cars. If the dual carriageway expansion of Main Road 35 is completed first, it will simply encourage more drivers to pass through Józsa, as it would become a wider and more convenient route into Debrecen. As a result, traffic would once again be concentrated in the district,” he emphasised.
Questions were raised at the forum regarding numerous streets throughout the Józsa district. In response to one such question, Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs, city councillor for the district, explained that an important objective is to ensure motorway access from both Lower Józsa and Upper Józsa. For this reason, when the planned roundabout is constructed, connecting roads for the affected streets will be built partly as part of the state-funded project and partly from municipal resources. “At this roundabout there will also be a direct right-turn lane for traffic coming from Hajdúböszörmény. If we want to divert motorists away from travelling through Józsa or along Main Road 35 into Debrecen, they can be directed onto this right-turn branch, helping to reduce through traffic in the district,” he added.
A significant proportion of the questions concerned traffic on Elek Street and Rózsavölgy Street. Mayor László Papp suggested that residents themselves should decide whether to close the section connected to the M35 motorway. Local people will therefore make the decision through a signature-collection campaign.
Residents also shared their transport-related proposals and requests during the forum. In addition to municipal representatives, delegates from Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. and DKV Zrt. answered questions from local residents. Several comments were made regarding public transport, including timetable issues and route planning. The company will review these suggestions. A number of residents also raised concerns about road conditions and the capacity of certain junctions. These issues will be examined by the municipality.
Following requests from residents, the municipality will now also accept suggestions and comments via a dedicated suggestion box located at the DEMKI Józsa Community Centre.
