Pulmonologist at University of Debrecen Receives Prestigious Recognition
The Korányi Ring is the lifetime achievement award of the Hungarian Respiratory Society and is regarded as one of the most prestigious professional distinctions in Hungarian pulmonology. It is awarded to the country’s most distinguished specialists in recognition of several decades of exceptional scientific, clinical and patient-care achievements. This year, the society presented the Korányi Ring to László Brugós, Chief Clinical Physician at the University of Debrecen’s Pulmonology Clinic.
“Empathy and continuous professional development are the foundations of medical practice. We must be prepared to respond appropriately to everyday challenges, educate and train future doctors, share our knowledge and publish our observations. We must remain at our patients’ bedsides and do everything possible to aid their recovery and make their illnesses more bearable. I see the Korányi Ring as recognition of this professional creed, and it is particularly meaningful because it was awarded by fellow pulmonologists. Although I received the distinction personally, it also belongs to the professional community of the Pulmonology Clinic and department, to whom I owe a great deal,” said Chief Clinical Physician László Brugós upon receiving the award.
The specialist graduated in 1976 from the Medical University of Cluj-Napoca as a general physician. He subsequently obtained specialist qualifications in internal medicine, allergology and clinical immunology, as well as pulmonology. In 2013, he earned a PhD with a dissertation titled The Role of Adenosine Receptors in Functional Responses of Airway Smooth Muscle and Mononuclear Cells.
Since 1990, he has worked at the Pulmonology Clinic of the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen, where he currently serves as Chief Clinical Physician and Head of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Outpatient Service. His scientific interests include cystic fibrosis, COPD and asthma, while he also focuses extensively on immunotherapy and the investigation of latent tuberculosis.
“What I am most proud of is that I have been part of the clinic’s life every day since 1990. I am delighted that the profession has recognised my more than thirty-five years of work and awarded me this prestigious prize, which before me had only been received at our clinic by three professors: László Mihóczy, Mária Szilasi and our current department chair, Ildikó Horváth. I am also pleased that students voted me Lecturer of the Year and that, in 2025, I received the Gustav Miskovits Award from the society’s Section of Allergology and Respiratory Pathology. These honours provide valuable feedback that my work genuinely contributes to the development of our community,” he explained.
László Brugós received the Korányi Ring at the 64th Congress of the Hungarian Respiratory Society. During the event, the organisation also elected its new leadership. The Pulmonology Clinic will be represented on the society’s executive board by Attila Vaskó, Professional Coordinator for Bronchology, while Angéla Mikáczó, the clinic’s General Professional Coordinator, and Réka Keszthelyi, Chief Clinical Physician of the Pulmonary Care Unit, will serve as board members in the future.
