Reliable Kindergarten System Supports Families in Debrecen
The enrollment period for Debrecen’s kindergartens for the 2026/2027 school year has begun. The city’s municipal kindergarten network offers well-thought-out, safe, and diverse options for families, while ensuring an appropriate educational environment for every child. Debrecen’s goal is for the kindergarten years to provide a stable foundation and enable every child to start their school years well prepared.
At the press conference, Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasized that kindergarten enrollment choosing an institution are decisive decisions for families in terms of their children’s future. As he said, Debrecen operates a kindergarten system that provides safety and a stable developmental environment for every child. Regardless of which municipal kindergarten a child is admitted to, they will be in good hands and benefit from an excellent professional background.
The deputy mayor drew attention to the fact that kindergarten application is mandatory for children born before September 1, 2023, and parents may indicate three institutions in order of preference. Application forms are available online and at the kindergartens themselves, with a submission deadline of February 20. The city’s aim is to provide reliable, high-quality kindergarten care for every family, because in Debrecen every child matters, he added.
Lajos Barcsa also stated that Debrecen operates 33 municipal kindergartens across 47 sites, with a total capacity of 6,700 places. City-wide utilization is approximately 80 percent, and the average group size is 21–22 children, which ensures appropriate attention and an optimal educational environment for the children.
At the press conference, the head of the Alsójózsa Kerekerdő Kindergarten, which hosted the event and held an open day, Nikolett Vinczéné Simon, spoke about how their institution has been working with the program titled “Kindergarten Education Through the Tools of the Arts” since 2016, while talent development and environmentally conscious education also play an important role in the life of the institution. She highlighted that the kindergarten, which was fully renovated in 2019, provides a modern and friendly environment where children are welcomed by a well-prepared and dedicated teaching staff. As she emphasized, the purpose of the open day was to allow parents to gain personal insight into the kindergarten’s everyday life and pedagogical work.
City councilor Róbert Juráskó spoke about how Józsa is one of Debrecen’s most dynamically growing districts, where a complete educational chain is available to families from nursery through the end of primary school, as the area already has two nurseries, three kindergartens, and two schools. He highlighted the continuous development of the kindergarten’s surroundings, the expansion of green areas, and improvements to transportation conditions, including the launch of the J1 bus line, which makes access to the institution easier.
Decisions on kindergarten admissions will be made by March 10, and enrollment will take place on April 28–29.
