Renovation of Attila Square Greek Catholic Cathedral Enters Final Stretch
The renovation of Attila Square Greek Catholic Cathedral has entered a highly visible phase. During the project, which began in January 2024, the nearly three-tonne high altar carved from Thassos marble has already been installed. Soon, a supporting beam weighing around 200 kilograms will be placed above the altar to carry the cross.
The renovation involves far more than technical modernisation of the building. Underfloor heating is being installed, an air conditioning system is being fitted, and both sound and CCTV systems are being upgraded. At the current stage of the works, the church can no longer accommodate worshippers, so services are being held at the Greek Catholic community centre. “This has been a long process, one that the community has experienced together throughout the renovation. While the church itself is being renewed, we hope that the community will also grow and be renewed in a spiritual sense,” said parish priest Miklós Sivadó.
According to the contractors, the most demanding stage of the project is now under way. Work is currently focused on completing the artistic decorative painting, which requires exceptional precision to ensure the cathedral’s renovation is brought to a fitting conclusion. “We are completing the artistic decoration on the ground floor and side walls, a process that demands exceptional accuracy and concentration. Our aim is to ensure that every detail of the renovation is worthy of the building’s heritage,” said Attila Gál, managing director of the principal contractor, Palladian Kft.
As part of the works, the artworks on the side walls have been repainted, while the paintings in the dome have been carefully reconstructed. In total, approximately 1,000 square metres of wall surfaces have been restored with the contribution of three mural artists. “Our aim was to create a new visual programme that follows the traditions of Byzantine iconography while, as far as Byzantine art allows, harmonising in both colour palette and style with the original secco paintings by Ferenc Lohr,” added Tamás Seres, painter and conservator-restorer.
The works are expected to be completed at the beginning of October. Until the cathedral reopens, services will continue to be held at the Greek Catholic Church’s community centre.
