Several investors would like to renovate Debrecen’s Main Railway Station
According to Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár, the winner may be chosen this year.
Due to the heat wave, the Minister of Construction and Transport continued his street forum, “Lázárinfó” series online, at which on July 25 the issue of the renovation of Hungarian railway stations was also discussed.
Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár said that there is private capital in Debrecen, there are private entrepreneurs who would take over the development of the railway station, and they can decide this year who to entrust with this with state participation.
The minister also answered the question about the Debrecen Main Railway Station.
As is known, János Lázár announced in Debrecen that several domestic railway stations, including the one in Debrecen, would be renovated with the involvement of private capital.
The Minister of Construction and Transport stated at the time that the idea was to separate the railway operation and the commercial functions and make the latter accessible to private capital. The plan is that MÁV and the company that won the tender would establish a joint real estate development company, in which MÁV would have a maximum 25 percent stake. This would not only renew the Debrecen Railway Station, but also expand it with new commercial functions, and this real estate would be managed by the consortium formed by the investing company and MÁV.
MÁV also announced a tender, for which, according to press information, the Turkish-owned Synergy Construction Hungary Kft., which also built the BMW factory, submitted a bid, but it was later announced that many more people had expressed their development intentions and ideas than were able to prepare their tender materials that met all the formal and content requirements by the tight deadline, so they decided to launch a new tender. According to János Lázár’s recent statement, there are now more applicants for this.
The head of the ministry stated at the forum in Berettyóújfalu in June that the goal is for a Hungarian company to renovate the Main Railway Station and operate its commercial areas in the future, and he would consider it most ideal for this to be a company from Debrecen or Hajdú-Bihar, or a consortium of them.
In February, Mayor László Papp stated in the programme Debrecen Közügy (Debrecen Public Affairs) of Médiacentrum Debrecen that Budapest made the wrong decision regarding the “Mini-Dubai,” as it is worth involving private capital in such large-scale developments.
The city leader highlighted that the renovation of the Debrecen railway station has been overdue for a long time and is an important issue, and it is in the city’s interest for this to happen. He emphasised that the state will not withdraw from the station buildings, as the Hungarian state and the applicant will establish a joint company. The city of Debrecen can supervise the investment using regulatory parameters, so plans can be prepared in accordance with the local building regulations.
