Six Debrecen-based Animal Welfare Organisations Receive Government Funding

Six organisations in Debrecen received funding through a grant scheme run by the Ministry of Justice, which they can use for neutering, veterinary care, vehicle purchases and facilities development.

The average monthly veterinary costs of Debrecen’s largest animal shelter, run by the “Együtt az Állatokért” (Together for Animals) Animal Welfare Public Benefit Association, amount to HUF 2.5 million. The association will also use part of the HUF 1.3 million in funding it received from the Ministry of Justice to cover veterinary services.

A total of six organisations in Debrecen received around HUF 13 million in funding from this source.

“Many injured animals come to us. They primarily require orthopaedic surgery, sometimes undergoing several procedures, while others need tumour-removal operations. These cases either have to be treated as emergencies, with us rushing them straight to the veterinary surgery, or involve wounds and previous injuries that were not properly treated by the person caring for the animal before it came to us,” said Petra Nagy, deputy chair of the “Együtt az Állatokért” Animal Welfare Public Benefit Association. There are currently 186 dogs and 67 cats living at the shelter on Kuvasz Street. Around 100 dogs have already been adopted this year, but almost twice as many have arrived at the shelter.

The animals arriving at the shelter are microchipped and vaccinated, and are also neutered, with veterinary care provided for them as well. One fifth of the newly awarded funding must be spent on neutering. This significantly increases the animals’ chances of being adopted, as the cost of neutering a medium-sized female dog can range from HUF 50,000 to as much as HUF 100,000.
