“Move with Szent László” Sports Competition Held for Fourth Time
The Move Debrecen School Programme and the Szent László Greek Catholic Grammar School and Technical School, maintained by the Greek Catholic Archdiocese of Hajdúdorog, organised the Move with Szent László sports competition at the school for the fourth time on 22 and 23 September 2026.
As part of the event, teams of eight students from Years 7 and 8 competed against one another in a variety of unconventional, creative and playful events, testing their knowledge, skills and ingenuity. A total of 20 teams entered the competition: most were from Debrecen, while one school each represented Egyek and Tépe.
Before the semi-final on 22 September, Éva Hámori, headteacher of the Szent László Greek Catholic Grammar School and Technical School, Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen and one of the founders of the Move Debrecen movement, and Gábor Szilágyi, the school’s spiritual director, welcomed and encouraged the participants. Based on the results of the first day of competition, 10 teams advanced to the final on 23 September.
As Diána Széles emphasised in connection with the event, four years ago they launched the Move Debrecen School Programme, whose sole purpose is to help children develop a love of physical activity while also providing them with opportunities to exercise. This is particularly important because children growing up in today’s digital world are much less physically active than young people from previous generations. One of the lessons learned from regular health screenings of schoolchildren in Debrecen is that there are many overweight children, making the physical activities offered by the Move Debrecen School Programme, together with the related nutritional advice, an important complement to the health screenings. The Deputy Mayor thanked all the school maintainers for supporting the programme, which means that this September, extracurricular physical activities have once again been launched twice a week at a total of 40 schools. The work of the coordinators responsible for organising these activities is supported financially by the Municipality of Debrecen. It is also encouraging that several schools have decided to organise their own events as part of the Move Debrecen School Programme. The first of these was Move with Szent László, held four years ago. Today, it has become the flagship competition of the Move Debrecen School Programme, and because of the experiences it offers, students compete within their schools for the chance to be selected for the teams taking part, representing and fighting for their own communities and schools.
On behalf of the Move Debrecen movement, Diána Széles thanked Éva Hámori, headteacher of the Szent László Greek Catholic Grammar School and Technical School; Emese Kiss, the staff member of the Greek Catholic Archdiocese of Hajdúdorog responsible for vocational training and institutional applications; and Judit Kovács, the school’s Deputy Director for Development, for their contribution to and assistance with organising the competition.
Based on the total number of points scored, the final results of the competition were as follows:

Thanks to the sponsors, every finalist team was able to take home a gift package, while the teams finishing on the podium received medals and trophies.
