Statement on Odour Nuisance Reported in Debrecen
In recent days, reports of unpleasant odours in several areas of Debrecen have appeared on various platforms. Several factors may be contributing to the unpleasant smells. As part of autumn agricultural activities, fields are commonly fertilised at this time of year. In addition, as was suspected in connection with a similar odour nuisance last autumn, the activities of TAPI Hungary Industries Kft., which operates on the TEVA site, may also be contributing to the problem.
The Municipality of the City of Debrecen has contacted TAPI Hungary Industries Kft. and the Hajdú-Bihar County Disaster Management Directorate. Following several reports from residents, firefighters in Debrecen carried out measurements on Saturday evening using the equipment available to them. Although they have not yet been able to identify the source of the odour, they established that there were no substances harmful to health in the air.
There is no emergency situation.
Staff at TAPI Hungary Industries Kft. are continuing to investigate the cause of the odour and are working to eliminate it as soon as possible.
The municipality continues to monitor the situation and thanks residents for their patience and understanding.
The municipality calls on TAPI Hungary Industries Kft.’s management to review its manufacturing processes and introduce fully enclosed production systems to prevent similar unpleasant odours from affecting local residents in the future. The company’s management is also asked to submit an action plan outlining the proposed measures to the municipality and make the plan publicly available so that everyone can access it.
