Summer adventures at the Debrecen Zoo camp
Debrecen Zoo’s summer camp is an experience that will leave a lasting impression on children. Zoo educators teach through play and experience, while instilling a love of nature and animals.
The Debrecen Zoo is not just a visitor experience park. During the summer, Zoo Camp opens a real gateway to the world of animals. Children can get up close and personal with creatures from five continents, while gaining hands-on knowledge and life-changing experiences. The main aim of the camp is education and nature conservation, which the experts pass on through playful activities.
“You can not only look at the animals, but also touch them, feed them, clean up after them, and understand them at the same time. The programme has something new for every day. At the beginning of the week, there’s getting to know the petting zoo’s inhabitants, followed by sensitisation with the “I don’t like” animals, a test of courage and caring tasks. All in a fun and educational way,” Zoo educator Attila Bathó explains.
One of the campers, Zétény Pusztai who wants to become a vet, talked about his biggest experience was the macaw parrot he got to hold in his arms.
The camp also often provides information that is rarely taught elsewhere. For example, Frida Emilia Papp learned how to hold snakes safely and that insects are friendly creatures and nothing to be afraid of.
In the process, the children become part of a community where they learn from each other.
“It’s amazing how they correct each other when someone gets something wrong. It’s a much better way of retaining knowledge,” Director of the Nagyerdei Culture Park Zoltán Váradi emphasised.
So this camp is much more than just a petting zoo. It is an experience, learning, community and future. A safe, yet exciting world where every child can become an explorer. The most important lesson of Zoo Camp is learning through experience. Summing up the approach the educator said, “I hear it and I forget it, I see it and I remember it, I do it and I understand it.”
