Temperatures of 38–39°C Expected in Debrecen Over Coming Days

A new heat dome has arrived over Hungary, bringing extremely high temperatures. Overnight temperatures are not expected to fall below 20°C. Drinking water distribution has resumed across the city and misting stations are once again in operation. Local bathing facilities are also prepared to welcome those seeking relief from the heat.

With the introduction of the Code Red heat alert, water distribution has resumed in the city centre. Volunteers from the member organisations of the Debrecen Charitable Board are available during the hottest hours of the day at the corner of Hatvan Street, providing drinking water to residents. Prolonged periods of extreme heat are particularly difficult for children, older people and those living with chronic health conditions. Misting stations are operating at several locations throughout Debrecen, and public drinking fountains remain available to anyone in need of water.

As temperatures continue to rise, more and more people are switching on air conditioning units, resulting in steadily increasing daily electricity consumption. However, due to the heat and low water levels, the Government has decided to temporarily shut down the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. In a video published on his social media channels, Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the country’s electricity supply is not at risk, but that a rotational contingency plan has been prepared in response to the prolonged heatwave. “The plan identifies major public-sector and industrial consumers that may be required, if necessary, to reorganise or temporarily reduce their energy consumption. Hospitals, social care institutions and other essential public services are naturally excluded and cannot be included among any consumers subject to restrictions,” he emphasised.

Due to the heat alert, Magyar Posta has introduced temporary working arrangements and will close premises without air conditioning at midday. In the Debrecen area, this affects the post office in Macs, located at 20 Kastélykert.

For many people, the heat is only bearable near water. Aquaticum Strand is operating at full capacity to accommodate visitors seeking to cool off. Experience shows that visitor numbers rise in line with temperatures. “Swimmers begin arriving as early as 6 a.m. By around 8 a.m., families who have prepared in advance are already arriving with their children. It is particularly noteworthy that families tend to come early so that they can move young children to sheltered areas during the hottest part of the day,” said Tibor Holléry, Director of Bath Services at Aquaticum Debrecen. Many visitors to the bathing complex are also seeking shaded areas to avoid sunburn, as ultraviolet radiation levels remain extremely high across the region in addition to the intense heat.

The Red Code alert associated with the heat dome remains in force until midnight on 4 August, although the authorities have indicated that the alert may be extended if conditions warrant.
