The motorway linking Debrecen to the capital is to be rebuilt and partly widened to six lanes

Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár announced several developments in Eger on Thursday, after a workshop with the city’s new mayor, Ákos Vágner. The minister also spoke about the renewal of the M3 motorway at a press conference following the meeting.

János Lázár said that this region is seen as a region of opportunities, “everything is in place to develop cooperation with the government”.

“An important election result has been achieved, as voters in Salgótarján, Miskolc and Eger supported Fidesz candidates, so everything is in place for cooperation with the government instead of warfare”, the Minister said.

János Lázár spoke of a number of government measures to help the region catch up. Among the goals he mentioned facilitating transport between the capital and the northern Hungarian region.

“We have fulfilled an old promise when we spent HUF 67 billion to link the M25 motorway with the M3 motorway.” the Minister recalled. He said that a large-scale road rehabilitation programme would be launched for the North-Eastern Hungarian region, the reconstruction of the M3 motorway.

The minister said that the motorway would be completely rebuilt in the coming years by the government in consortium with its operator.

The primary aim of the reconstruction work currently underway is to eliminate the risk of accidents, as the M3 is in a very poor state. The motorway is due to undergo a 100 billion HUF  upgrade by the 31st of August 2025.

“The M3 motorway will be upgraded to six lanes from junction 31 to Gyöngyös at a cost of 420 billion forints,” he explained, indicating that the project would start in the next period and would last for a long time.
