The “Move, Debrecen! ” initiative marks its fourth anniversary
One of the city’s most popular movements, the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, is four years old. The exercise program started with the Heart-Friendly thematic walk in 2021, so the birthday was celebrated in the Great Forest. Over the four years, more than 270 thousand people participated in various events.
As always, the Heart-Friendly walk started with a warm-up. The “Move, Debrecen!” initiative started with the thematic walk in 2021. There are participants who have been here almost every time since the beginning.
At first, there were programs available to the public at four locations, and today this number has more than quadrupled. Nearly seven thousand programs have been organized over the past four years.
“More than 270 thousand people have participated in our programs at least once. It is a great pleasure that many of them come back regularly. We are constantly expanding, and our screening center plays a key role in health preservation,” said Dr. Csaba Papp, director of the Debrecen Institute for Primary Care and Health Development.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa also pointed out that the economic development of recent years has made it possible to launch this initiative, which offers the population not only outdoor but also indoor exercise opportunities.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasized that it is not the numbers that are important, but the communities formed by the program.
“When creating the program, our goal was to bring people closer to each other. After the COVID period, many people isolated themselves, but ‘Move, Debrecen!’ builds a community and encourages movement and togetherness,” she highlighted.
The fourth birthday was celebrated in an unusual way—not with cake, but with apples, muesli bars, and pumpkin cookies. True to tradition, the customary themed walk also took place.
