The students of Debreceni Fazekas Mihály Primary School planted a tree on Car-Free Day
The Fazekas Mihály Primary School joined the European Mobility Week this year and organized an unusual, experience-based car-free day, which focused on environmental awareness and community education. In addition to the traditional skill competitions and road safety presentations, the students also planted three saplings in the schoolyard.
The goal of the Fazekas Mihály Primary School is for children to experience the importance of sustainability not only in theory but also in practice and to acquire knowledge about environmental protection.
At the opening of the event, the school’s principal, Dr. Gabriella Rajnainé Nyiri, welcomed the many students arriving on bicycles and scooters and encouraged them to gain as many experiences as possible. Movement and participation in the community played a prominent role during the day.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles also participated in the event, saying that Car-Free Day has been a tradition in “Kisfazekas” for years. She added that this time they were thinking a little differently and wanted to raise children’s awareness of environmental awareness by planting trees together. Their goal is for students to take care of the trees they have planted and to appreciate the significance of this activity. Debrecen’s environmental protection program is a key pillar of the city’s life, with tree planting as a major component. The ‘Adopt a Tree!’ initiative, launched this year, has also proven to be successful.”
In addition to planting saplings, the children created a live picture forming a tree at the event. With the involvement of the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters, they learned about the rules of cycling, and during the ambulance demonstration, they also acquired basic resuscitation techniques.” The day was rounded off with skill competitions and Zumba.
