This is How New EU Border Registration System Works at Debrecen International Airport

The European Union’s new biometric border control system has led to long queues and disruptions at a number of European airports, prompting the European Commission to initiate discussions aimed at reducing congestion.

Dehir.hu has contacted the press office of Debrecen International Airport on the matter and, according to the information provided, the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) has been operating at Hungary’s external border crossing points since November 2025, including at Debrecen International Airport. The statement notes that the digital system enables the electronic recording of the entry and exit of non-EU nationals, including the collection of passengers’ biometric data, such as facial images and fingerprints.

For non-EU nationals registering in the system for the first time, the collection of biometric data may extend the border crossing process by a few minutes. They are therefore advised to arrive at the airport earlier than usual. The airport also pointed out that the EES applies only to nationals of countries outside the European Union who are entering the Schengen Area for a short stay. Therefore, EU citizens, individuals travelling as family members of EU citizens, or those holding a valid Schengen residence permit or a long-stay visa are exempt.

According to the airport, the purpose of the EES is to provide a unified electronic record of entries and exits at the European Union’s external borders, thereby supporting more effective border control, enhancing public security, and contributing to smoother and more transparent lawful travel.
