Trains Like These Will Soon Arrive on the Debrecen–Záhony Line
Hungary is purchasing 93 used but excellent‑condition Swiss multiple units, some of which will operate in the Debrecen region.
At the latest “Közlekedésinfó” briefing, Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár said that MÁV currently has 140,000 seats, and they expect to need 200,000 within ten years. He announced that at the end of December he signed the contract for the purchase of 93 used Swiss multiple units, which will enter service after refurbishment, providing a total seating capacity of 14,000.
According to the minister, these are 15–20‑year‑old Stadler‑built trains in excellent condition, which can be used for another 20 years after refurbishment. He added that they will primarily serve suburban routes around Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, and Miskolc. A video of the trains has since been published on the minister’s Facebook page.

The trains are being prepared for service in Hungary in Szolnok, where they will also be maintained. Some of the units will operate on the Debrecen–Záhony railway line. The total seating capacity of the 93 trains is 13,605. The trains are 3 metres wide, with the longest types measuring 53 metres, and they are designed for speeds of up to 140 km/h.
They feature ergonomic padded seats, spacious interiors with large panoramic windows, air‑conditioned passenger areas, and low noise levels. They offer low‑floor boarding and space for prams and bicycles. Their articulated design ensures smooth, low‑vibration travel.
The minister pointed out that Hungary intends to purchase 100 new multiple units from China, which could be manufactured within two to three years, and that new InterCity coaches will also be acquired. According to earlier statements, some of these will also be allocated to the Debrecen–Budapest line.
The briefing also touched on the fact that Hungarian car manufacturing is concentrated mainly in Eastern Hungary—in Kecskemét, Debrecen, and Szeged. He noted that these factories will produce one million cars in the coming years, and the vehicles will be transported by rail. For this reason, strengthening the Miskolc–Budapest, Nyíregyháza–Budapest, Debrecen–Budapest, and Szeged–Budapest rail corridors, as well as ensuring a Danube crossing, is essential. According to the minister, the loan received from the European Investment Bank will significantly support these developments.
