Travel Agencies Expect No Mass Flight Cancellations Due to Rising Kerosene Prices
Although much has been said in recent weeks about rising kerosene prices and potential supply issues, travel agencies say the summer season is so far expected to begin without disruption. According to industry experts, most charter flights are expected to depart as planned, although some travellers are delaying their bookings.
Several agencies secured the necessary capacities and contracts before the start of the season, meaning that most summer holidays can proceed under unchanged conditions. Experts have nevertheless warned that aviation costs are increasing worldwide, so fuel surcharges may appear on certain routes or for later bookings. However, the scale of these increases remains limited for now, and travel agencies say there is no need to expect mass flight cancellations or summer chaos.
“Booking activity has declined. Many people who have not yet decided whether they want to travel, or where they would like to travel, are waiting to see how these developments will affect the 2026 summer season. However, regarding the kerosene shortage or kerosene prices, we would like to reassure everyone that there is no such danger,” said Zoltán Oláh, Office Manager at Atlasz Travel.
Experts also stress that travellers should continue to pay particular attention to travel insurance before summer trips. Insurers report that, due to the uncertain economic environment and news surrounding air travel, increasing numbers of people are looking for policies that also provide cover for flight delays, baggage damage or even trip cancellations. According to experts, suitable insurance can provide significant assistance in unexpected situations abroad.
“Keep all documents: your airline ticket, confirmation from the airline if, for example, a flight is delayed or cancelled, invoices for additional expenses, and your travel insurance policy. In fact, for flight cancellations or delays, there are already insurers that provide compensation automatically without requiring a claim to be submitted,” highlighted Attila Jeney, Head of Communications at the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies.
The expert added that it is a misconception that insurers do not pay out in emergency situations, although choosing the right insurance policy carefully is essential. Today, more than ten insurers in Hungary offer a very wide range of travel insurance products.
