University of Debrecen Reaches Top in Two Categories
The University of Debrecen received prestigious recognition this year from the Ministry of Culture and Innovation in both the Sports University and Student Career Development University categories. At the gala held on Monday evening at the Royal Palace of Gödöllő, the institution’s strategic ambitions were praised, and the awards were accepted by Chancellor Zoltán Bács, Vice-Rector Károly Pető, and Kevin Németh, President of the Student Union.
Following last year’s “student-friendly” award and the Chancellor’s special prize, the University of Debrecen once again ranked among the top performers. In the competition, which has expanded to ten categories, the institution was a finalist in four areas, winning two of them – in sport and career development – as judged by the professional jury.
The victory in the Sports University category recognises the University of Debrecen’s more than century-old sporting traditions, the DEAC, which brings together 33 divisions, and its unique dual career programme. Chancellor Zoltán Bács emphasised upon receiving the award that sport at the institution is not merely a physical activity, but a fundamental measure of value. “The University of Debrecen does nothing more than use sport and culture as forces for building community. Every day we strive to overcome ourselves, our limits, and sometimes others as well. We know that one cannot compete alone; partners are needed. We work to be a defining yet cooperative member of Hungarian higher education, and together with everyone we aim to move Hungary forward,” the Chancellor stated.
The institution also won the Student Career Development University category. This recognition reflects a conscious ecosystem that supports students’ employability through initiatives such as the Business Innovation Club, extensive industrial partnerships and practice-oriented training programmes. Upon receiving the second award, the Chancellor once again highlighted the strength of the university community and expressed his gratitude to all athletes, coaches, lecturers and staff whose dedicated work contributed to the institution being one of the most successful players in Hungarian higher education in 2026.
At the gala, Minister for Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó pointed out that the renewal of Hungarian higher education is a shared success story built on sovereignty, performance and innovation, which has made the system more resilient. “The Hungarian university sector today is vibrant, fresh and self-confident, extending beyond borders and not only representing the cause of the nation but shaping its future. We have made the system so strong that eight out of ten students would recommend their own institution to friends, and we offer every graduate stable employment, competitive salaries and the security needed to start a family. We have not arrived yet, but we have set off at a strong pace: we Hungarians belong among the world’s elite, and the sky is the limit,” he said.
Balázs Hankó also noted that this year more students have applied to higher education than at any time in the past decade and a half, and that universities, making use of the autonomy granted to them, can now responsibly shape their own future based on real performance.
