University of Debrecen students can make a difference through volunteer work
The training courses offer opportunities to participate in voluntary charitable and national defense activities, as well as in the Hospital School program.
As part of the voluntary charity work course, students can experience charitable thinking and care at the university’s registered partners, as well as at university student organizations and professional colleges.
They have the opportunity to save animals, protect nature, and help those in need. Partners include, for example, the Nagyerdei Cultural Park, the Hortobágy Bird Park, and ReFoMix.
“As part of the course, students can contribute to the care of those in need, get involved in the activities of the Hortobágy Bird Park, help out at the zoo, and participate as volunteers in the work and screening programs of DEKOM, the University of Debrecen’s Special Medical and Rescue Team. The students’ charitable activities are coordinated by the Disaster Medicine and Charity Coordination Center,” András Késmárky, Director of the Disaster Medicine and Charity Coordination Center of the University of Debrecen, explained.
As part of the course, students must complete 30 hours of volunteer work, which is worth 2 credit points.
Students can also do voluntary work as part of the Hospital School subject. In the special, unique volunteer program, students help sick children learn by tutoring and preparing for exams.
“The course is being announced in cooperation with the “KórházSuli” (Hospital School) Foundation. The students participating in the training will help sick children continue their studies at the Pediatric Clinic and in child psychiatry. We would like to see more teacher training students participate in the course than before. The aim of the training is for students to use their professional knowledge and empathy to support children cared for in institutions,” added András Késmárky.
Within the framework of the course, after 17 hours of theoretical education held online, students must complete 13 hours of practice.
The University of Debrecen has created the national defense training course in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, which is unique in Hungarian higher education, provides the opportunity to master basic military training, and represents 3 credits per semester.
“Applicants must take part in a physical assessment and complete an obstacle course. In the first semester, students acquire military basics in theory and get a comprehensive picture of the military. The second semester can only be enrolled in by students who have successfully completed the first and have signed a voluntary reserve contract with the Hungarian Defense Forces. To complete the basic training, the student must participate in a summer practical training as a reserve soldier, which is organized by the Hungarian Defense Forces,” explained the director of the Disaster Medicine and Charity Coordination Center of the University of Debrecen.
The optional training courses are announced at all faculties of the University of Debrecen. Detailed information about the courses can be found on the website of the Disaster Medicine and Charity Coordination Center of the University of Debrecen.
