What do expats living in Debrecen think about the city?

Debrecen4U asked expats in the city what they think about Debrecen and why they like living here. Read about their thoughts they shared with us!

What is your impression of the city?

It is an expanded city, which offers all services that we could need.

It is calm and quiet which is suitable for studies (less distractions). It is green and walkable which is its best qualities.

It’s a town on a human scale, with all the conveniences you need to make a living.

What integration challenges have you experienced?

When I first came, it was not common to find services provided in English, which was tough considering that we did not know Hungarian either. But I do not see this as a common issue now since a lot of places started having English speaking staff, and transportation for example announces stops in English.

Understanding how things work when you rent an apartment (unclear private insurance requirements, administrative quality of the signed lease, etc.)

What is the biggest challenge for an expat in Debrecen?

Language barriers.

Finding a job after graduation if they are a student. If not, then navigating through the immigration office processes.

Transportation at night. Transportation in general is not the most convenient but especially at night it is non-existent I would say.

What is the best thing about living/working in Debrecen?

The weather.

You can go anywhere on foot/bike, nothing tops that in my opinion, but maybe because I came from hectic cities.

Nagyerdő is a really good place to be at!

This is more company specific than Debrecen specific but the atmosphere here at the company I work for. Helps a lot in my opinion!

Quick access to amenities during the week and the opportunity to discover new cultures (proximity to other countries).

What is it that makes you like living here? What is your favourite place, food, etc?

The access to different sport activities and the people.

This is pretty hard to word out since this depends on the people you surround yourself with and what activities you like to do.

As a lover of being outdoors, I like to go to the area around the stadium both for walks and for my sporting activities, so I’d say the stadium and its surroundings are my favorite place. As for the food, I don’t think I’ve covered everything, but there’s nothing like a good langos after a long bike ride.  I’m looking forward to the warmer weather and exploring even more of the good spots around Debrecen. Besides, I’m always open to ideas.

If you would also like to share your opinion with us, don’t hesitate to send us your answers to the below questions to info@debrecen4u.hu. Thank you!
