Work progressing at a good pace – major investments for smoother traffic
Mayor László Papp provided a comprehensive overview of the current status of the city’s large-scale transportation development program at the Szoboszlói Road – Külsővásártér junction, which is currently under renovation.
The HUF 14 billion investment aims to renew four major intersections in the city, offering solutions to problems that have persisted for decades. The mayor emphasized the importance of residents’ patience, especially with the start of the school year approaching.
Mayor László Papp thanked commuters for their patience over the past months and stressed that in 2025, Debrecen launched a HUF 14 billion transportation development program focused on increasing the capacity of four major junctions: Szoboszlói Road – Külsővásártér; Balmazújvárosi–Füredi Road – Csigekert Street; Hétvezér–Vámospércsi–Budai Nagy Antal Street; and the junction of Route 354 with Vezér Street. He added that the ongoing investments are extremely complex and provide solutions to long-standing issues.
The mayor stated that work at the Szoboszlói Road junction began in March, and the contractor is carrying out the tasks at a good pace. The technical completion of the project has already reached 60%. In the coming weeks and months, asphalt paving and curb construction will take place. He is confident that the work will be 90 percent complete by the onset of winter.
At the press conference, other key junctions were also discussed. Utility reconstruction is currently underway at the Füredi Road – Szabó Lőrinc – Csigekert and Hétvezér–Vámospércsi intersections. The mayor pointed out that during the renovation of decades-old utility networks, unexpected problems often arise, complicating the work. He asked the residents for their understanding, emphasizing that these works are for them and are being done on their behalf.
László Papp also spoke about the timing of the investments. He explained that the projects were launched with government support after being halted in 2022 due to budgetary constraints.
He added that the opportunity to access funding has now arisen, and they did not want to postpone it. The mayor expressed confidence that upon completion, Debrecen’s traffic will become safer and more convenient.
Finally, László Papp mentioned that the government has made a supportive decision regarding the first phase of the eastern inner traffic corridor, meaning its construction could begin within a foreseeable timeframe.
Member of Parliament László Pósán emphasized that no matter how well the municipality manages its finances, government support is necessary for investments involving significant capacity expansion and utility development. He expressed his satisfaction that funding was secured in the national budget for these projects. The MP also noted that urban traffic presents an increasingly growing challenge, as more and more cars are on the roads. That’s why it’s crucial not to delay urban transportation development.
