Com’on Debrecen: Young People Welcome to Shape Debrecen with Ideas

As part of Debrecen’s Community Budget initiative, teams of three can apply, and the best ideas will receive funding following a public vote. The application deadline has been extended: written proposals are now being accepted until 18 May.

Made in Debrecen Festival is becoming more popular year after year. This grassroots music event fills the centre of Debrecen for one day with local bands and performers. The essence of the festival is that amateur and professional musicians connected to the city introduce themselves through short concerts in various clubs and cultural venues.

“Now I’ve performed at the Made in Debrecen Festival for the third time, so fortunately I’ve always had the chance to appear here, and I absolutely love this festival. The truth is that I always apply because at times like this I feel that the music scene in Debrecen, which can sometimes become a little quiet, really comes alive again, and it’s fantastic to see,” musician Szilárd Nagy said previously. The event is both a community celebration and a musical showcase, demonstrating just how vibrant Debrecen’s contemporary music scene is.

Another new initiative is aimed at young people: through the Community Budget programme, young residents can now help shape the city with their own ideas. Teams of three may apply, and the best proposals can also receive funding following a public vote.

“There are a great many active young people, especially these informal groups, which are very strong. Usually, if they are in the right school environment with the support of suitable teachers and professionals, they develop these ideas further. And if there is additional support alongside that, including financial backing, they can turn them into reality — and this is exactly what we wanted to achieve at city level as well,” said Imre Enyedi, Head of the Tenders Team at the DEMKI Youth House.

Applications may be submitted in the categories of culture, sustainability, wellbeing and health, and social engagement. The organisers have extended the deadline: ideas awaiting implementation are now being accepted until 18 May as part of the Com’on Debrecen project.
