Latest Research Findings in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology from Debrecen Presented in the US

Specialists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Clinical Centre at the University of Debrecen presented their latest research findings in the field of paediatric and adolescent gynaecology at the world congress of the specialty in the United States. Their presentations at the international conference focused on modern treatment options for complex developmental abnormalities for which surgical solutions had previously been considered unfeasible. The innovative procedures presented may open up new possibilities in the treatment of rare and severe gynaecological developmental disorders.

At the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Clinical Centre at the University of Debrecen, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, which has a tradition spanning several decades, has undergone significant professional development in recent years. As a result, the Debrecen centre now plays not only a leading role nationally, but has also become an internationally recognised professional centre of excellence.

Clinical Director Zoárd Krasznai has been working in this field for more than twenty-five years. His work focuses on congenital Müllerian duct anomalies affecting the uterus and vagina. These rare and often extremely complex conditions may obstruct menstrual outflow, cause severe pain, significant anatomical abnormalities and complex functional problems in young patients, and may also substantially increase the long-term risk of developing endometriosis. “Managing such cases requires exceptional professional expertise, extensive experience and multidisciplinary collaboration. We have established a successful professional partnership with the paediatric surgery division of the Department of Paediatrics, and this joint multidisciplinary work enables patients to receive personalised, state-of-the-art care even in the most complex developmental abnormalities,” Associate Professor Zoárd Krasznai, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Clinical Centre at the University of Debrecen, told hirek.unideb.hu.

The latest scientific results achieved by the Debrecen specialists were recently presented — as the only representatives from Hungary — at the World Congress of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology held in San Francisco.

At the international professional forum, Zoárd Krasznai and Assistant Lecturer Szabolcs Molnár presented complex cases involving the treatment of Müllerian duct anomalies for which surgical solutions had previously appeared impossible.

“At the congress, we reported on a special case involving a modified Vecchietti vaginoplasty procedure. For the first time in the world, specialists at our clinic, working together with paediatric surgeons, applied the vaginal reconstruction procedure using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques in a young patient suffering from multiple developmental abnormalities involving the bladder, rectum and vagina, who had already undergone four reconstructive surgeries as a result of these conditions. In the subgroup of Müllerian duct anomalies where the developmental defect affects only part of the vagina and the cervix, the greatest challenge is ensuring that the integrity of the uterus and future reproductive capability can be fully preserved during reconstruction. We also reported successful solutions achieved at the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen after a series of unsuccessful surgical attempts performed at other institutions,” Zoárd Krasznai emphasised.

The Clinical Director added that high-quality patient care is supported not only by surgical and diagnostic expertise, but also by scientific and educational activities, which reinforce one another and ensure continuous development. The institution is the only centre in Hungary accredited as a full practical training site for Level I and Level II examinations of the International Federation of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.

In recent years, two specialists trained in Debrecen have also successfully obtained international certification in paediatric and adolescent gynaecology.

The clinic is likewise the only training centre in Hungary operating as an internationally accredited training centre for the teaching of the most advanced endoscopic surgical techniques through the Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgical Education and Assessment programme.

The Debrecen centre has become one of Hungary’s leading educational institutions in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.
