Planning for New Main Railway Station to Begin This Government Term, Says MP for Debrecen
The underpass at Debrecen’s Main Railway Station will undergo refurbishment in several phases, and lifts providing access to the platforms could be installed within the next one to two years. Representatives of MÁV Group and Members of Parliament from the governing Tisza Party discussed the plans on social media. According to MP Zsolt Tárkányi, the design work and permitting process for a completely new Main Railway Station are expected to begin during the current parliamentary term.
The renovation of the station underpass is due to commence shortly. The condition of the reinforced concrete structure began to deteriorate around two years ago, prompting comprehensive investigations. As part of these assessments, sections of the roof slab were dismantled for inspection. The final engineering report was completed in May 2026 and concluded that structural reinforcement of the roof slab is essential. “There is currently a speed restriction of 40 km/h above the underpass. In addition, to reduce dynamic loading, locomotives are unable to stop directly above the structure. However, passengers will not notice any difference when boarding or alighting from trains on the platforms,” explained Tibor Szilágyi, Deputy Chief Executive for Infrastructure Operations and Investments at MÁV Group.
The entire roof slab of the underpass will be replaced as part of the refurbishment, with the work being carried out in stages. The project will also include the installation of lifts connecting the underpass to the platforms, making the facility fully accessible for passengers with reduced mobility. “The lifts will arrive at the location where we are standing now. This is expected to be completed within the next one to two years. Our long-term objective, however, is a comprehensive reconstruction and the construction of a completely new Main Railway Station. At the very least, the planning process and the acquisition of the necessary permits will begin during the current government term,” emphasised Zsolt Tárkányi, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry for Transport and Investment and Member of Parliament for the Tisza Party.
A MÁV specialist also explained that the next phase of the project will involve the construction of a temporary support structure, expected to be completed by the end of the year. This measure will reduce dynamic loading and improve the load-bearing capacity of the underpass while preparations continue for the larger-scale reconstruction works.
