Season of Diversity Coming up at Vojtina Puppet Theatre

Diversity will be the defining theme of the Vojtina Puppet Theatre’s upcoming season, with the aim of appealing to audiences of all ages. The theatre is working on new productions and will also revive three previous performances.

The story of Tristan and Isolde was premiered by the Vojtina Puppet Theatre during the season that has just concluded. The production was distinctive not only because it was aimed at secondary school students and adults, but also because it combined physical theatre and puppetry within the same performance. One of the key objectives of Vojtina’s forthcoming 51st season is to ensure that, alongside diversity in genre and technique, other artistic disciplines are also represented in its productions.

“When puppetry and the allied arts – dance, music, film, circus and literature – open up their perspectives to one another even further, the question is what they can create together. All five of our new productions will explore this idea. We will not remain strictly within the boundaries of puppetry,” said Terka Láposi, Director of the Vojtina Puppet Theatre.

One of the special features of the upcoming season will be a production for babies entitled Fogódzó (Handhold), recommended for children from the age of three months. The theatre will celebrate the centenary of Winnie-the-Pooh with a production of The Hundred Acre Wood, while audiences aged 14 and over will be offered a contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.

The Three Wishes will demonstrate how a well-known folk tale can be adapted to a 21st-century setting, while Luminello the Clown will transport audiences into the world of the circus. At the season launch event, Deputy Mayor István Puskás remarked that Vojtina plays an important role in the collaboration that has developed among the city’s cultural institutions. “These partnerships can generate inspiration, as well as new and exciting opportunities and achievements, through which not only the individual participants but also, most importantly for all of us, the audience, can benefit and grow richer,” he pointed out.

During the 2026/27 season, Vojtina will revive three previously popular productions and keep 11 performances in its repertoire. Next June, Debrecen will once again host the International Red Hooded Puppets Festival.
