Most Pollutants Do Not Originate from Debrecen Plant, Semcorp Claims
As previously reported, the environmental authority suspended Semcorp’s operations after samples collected from monitoring wells, the stormwater drainage system and the reservoir showed levels of metals and metalloids above the legal thresholds.
The company issued a statement on Thursday, which is reproduced below without amendment.
“SEMCORP Hungary has reviewed the decision issued by the Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office ordering the temporary suspension of operations at its separator film manufacturing facility in Debrecen. SEMCORP is complying with the Authority’s requirements and will fully cooperate with the competent regulatory authorities and government bodies throughout the entire process.
Since the start of its operations in Hungary, SEMCORP has consistently sought to comply with all applicable environmental legislation and regulations while maintaining an open, transparent and constructive relationship with the Hungarian authorities.
During the current investigation, the company has cooperated with the authorities by providing the necessary information and technical documentation, facilitating on-site inspections and environmental sampling, and remains committed to supporting a thorough and objective assessment of the facts.
Based on the information contained in the administrative decisions, SEMCORP believes that legitimate factual questions remain regarding the origin of several of the substances identified during the investigation.
A significant proportion of the reported pollutants – particularly the heavy metals – are not part of SEMCORP’s separator manufacturing process, as the separator is primarily a polymer-based product.
SEMCORP respects the administrative procedure and is working within its framework to help clarify these technical issues, identify the source of the detected substances, and support the authorities in developing a comprehensive, scientifically sound assessment of the environmental condition of the site.
SEMCORP remains fully committed to environmental protection and is prepared, in accordance with the law, to accept full responsibility for any environmental impact ultimately found to be attributable to the company’s operations.
The company is also further strengthening its environmental management systems, operational controls and monitoring programmes to ensure that its activities continue to comply with, and where possible exceed, all applicable environmental requirements.
SEMCORP looks forward to continuing its cooperation with the competent authorities and all relevant stakeholders in order to establish the facts, address the environmental issues identified during the administrative proceedings, further strengthen its environmental monitoring and operational practices, and continue building cooperation with the local community as a responsible long-term employer and partner in Hungary,” the statement concludes.
