More Than 8,000 First-Year Students Enroll at the University of Debrecen
Similarly to last year, the University of Debrecen achieved outstanding figures in the 2026 general admissions procedure. More than 21,000 applicants applied for the institution’s programmes, with over 11,000 selecting one of its courses as their first choice. Applicants to the University of Debrecen were able to choose from 71 undergraduate programmes, 98 master’s programmes, six long-cycle programmes, 51 teacher training combinations within the integrated teacher education scheme, 48 dual-study programmes and four higher education vocational programmes.
A total of 8,265 applicants were admitted to the University of Debrecen in this year’s general admissions procedure, representing the best result of recent years. The institution admitted the highest number of first-year students to teacher education programmes (1,541), followed by medicine and health sciences (1,411). Large numbers of students will also begin their studies in September in economics (1,146) and engineering (816). The largest number of students were admitted to the Faculty of Economics and Business (1,649), the Faculty of Child and Special Needs Education (995), and the Faculty of Humanities (938). Among English-language programmes, the Faculty of Informatics (354), the Faculty of Medicine (346) and the Faculty of Engineering (335) admitted the highest number of students. The programmes attracting the greatest number of freshers this year were Nursing and Patient Care (550), Law (425), Early Childhood Education (359), Integrated Teacher Education (301) and Special Needs Education (294).
Among master’s programmes, the largest numbers of students were admitted to Psychology (59), Healthcare Management (57) and Human Resources Consultancy (54). A total of 6,657 applicants secured places funded by the Hungarian state, while 1,608 were admitted to self-financed programmes. The University of Debrecen’s off-site campuses also performed exceptionally well during the admissions process, with 984 students beginning their studies in Hajdúböszörmény, 261 in Szolnok, 403 in Nyíregyháza, and 127 in Siófok.
At Friday’s admissions press conference, Vice-Rector for Education Veronika Fenyves emphasised that the university can be immensely proud of this year’s results, as the admissions data clearly demonstrate the institution’s competitive strength. “We can be satisfied with these admissions results, as the 2026 admissions procedure has once again demonstrated the popularity of the University of Debrecen. Thanks to our broad educational portfolio and internationally recognised, highly marketable degrees, we have achieved our best admissions result in recent years. The university’s carefully designed programmes, developed in line with labour market expectations, are highly popular among applicants. Newly launched programmes including Artificial Intelligence Engineering, Radiography and the Contemporary Popular Music Master’s programme have all lived up to expectations. Thanks to the university’s well-considered strategy, we have introduced programmes for which there is significant demand,” she highlighted.
Those who were not admitted to their chosen programmes need not be discouraged, as they may still have an opportunity to gain admission through the supplementary admissions procedure. Beáta Ölvetiné Szabó, Director of Recruitment and Continuing Education at the Directorate-General for Education, drew attention to the key deadlines and requirements relating to supplementary admissions. “Applicants may indicate only one programme choice during the supplementary admissions procedure. If both self-financed and state-funded places are listed in the admissions guide, it is advisable to apply for both. The deadline for uploading documents is the same as the application deadline; by this date, applicants must provide proof that they meet the admission requirements and upload all documents to the e-Admissions system that may contribute to their overall admissions score. Based on previous years’ experience, several hundred additional students may gain admission through supplementary admissions, meaning that, together with doctoral candidates beginning their studies, the number of first-year students could exceed 12,000 by September 2026. Modernising the university’s admissions strategy also plays an important role. Our admissions points calculator has been enhanced with two new functions, enabling applicants to higher education vocational programmes and those holding professional qualifications to calculate their scores using the application. This is an outstanding and unique development at national level,” she said.
The supplementary admissions period begins on 30 July. Applications for programmes announced by the university may be submitted through the e-Admissions system until 7 August, while admissions thresholds are expected to be published on 27 August.
