Refreshing Cultural Spaces in Debrecen

In response to the current and persisting meteorological conditions affecting the country, Debrecen’s cultural institutions and exhibition venues are welcoming visitors throughout the week during their opening hours with free admission and refreshing indoor spaces.

Kölcsey Centre and Bényi Gallery

Kölcsey Centre is already operating as a cooling point where anyone is welcome to stop by for a short rest or to cool down. At Bényi Gallery, visitors can enjoy free admission to the exhibition Living Folk Art: 18th National Folk Art Exhibition – Northern Great Plain Region. The exhibition showcases some of the finest works created by traditional folk artisans from the Carpathian Basin. Featuring 21 different crafts and nearly 500 exhibits, the display presents objects inspired by tradition while remaining perfectly suited to contemporary homes, clothing and gift-giving.

MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art

Visitors to MODEM can enjoy free admission to the MODEM20 exhibition, as well as the exhibition by Emese Kádár on the ground floor. The air-conditioned communal areas (reception area, toilets, café and project space), as well as the garden, are also available free of charge.

DEMKI Youth House

DEMKI Nonprofit Youth House welcomes all visitors to its air-conditioned community spaces. In Gallery21, guests can visit the Fresh Vision – Creative Start exhibition free of charge, featuring the final examination projects of graduating graphic design and decorative arts students from the DSZC Creative Technical School.

Debrecen Great Reformed Church

The Great Church also serves as a cooling and refreshment point in the city centre. Visitors can enjoy cold drinking water in the church foyer, while exhibitions are on display inside the church. During opening hours (09:00–14:00), free admission is available to visitors with a Debrecen address card, including employees, pensioners and students. The church’s cool ground floor houses its permanent exhibitions, including the Kossuth Exhibition and the Congregational and Church History Exhibition.

New City Hall

An exhibition entitled Unpacking opened in June at the New Town Hall Gallery, featuring architectural drawings and scale models created by 15 recent graduates of the master’s programme in architecture at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Debrecen. The exhibition can be visited free of charge during the New Town Hall’s opening hours.

Déri Museum

From 4 to 7 August, the Déri Museum is offering free admission to its permanent exhibitions for holders of the Debrecen City Card during opening hours (10:00–18:00). In addition, the Museum Café is open free of charge to everyone during opening hours for those wishing to escape the heat.

Méliusz Juhász Péter Library

The Méliusz Library and its branch libraries welcome anyone wishing to cool down or enjoy some reading during opening hours. Library use and all events organised by the Library are free of charge.
