Gin, Gastronomy, and a Summer Atmosphere in the Heart of Debrecen

Preparations are already well under way in Dósa nádor Square, where the first Debrecen Gin Festival will be held on 14 and 15 August. The two-day, free-to-attend event will welcome visitors to the city centre with almost 50 varieties of gin and rum, special cocktails, a selection of food and live music.

At the press conference announcing the event, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles highlighted that she was pleased to see Debrecen businesses enriching the city’s programme of events with new ideas, thereby helping to strengthen the city’s appeal as a tourist and gastronomic destination. Launching a new festival requires both entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to take risks, which is why it is important for the city to support such initiatives. She said that there are Debrecen entrepreneurs who feel a strong sense of ownership of the city and want to contribute to it, and that the city must stand behind and support them. In this respect, she believes Debrecen stands out among Hungarian cities.

The Deputy Mayor stressed that the first Debrecen Gin Festival fits well into the city’s programme of events in August and is also one of the first major events linked to the Debrecen Flower Carnival. The aim is for a succession of gastronomic and cultural events during this period to bring Debrecen’s public spaces to life and further promote the city. Diána Széles also specifically thanked Gergő Gulyás and his wife, Hanna, for taking on the organisation of the first Debrecen Gin Festival as true local patriots and for enriching the city’s programme with another event featuring a unique atmosphere.

Gergő Gulyás, the main organiser of the Gin Festival, thanked the city for the opportunity and said that, in the long term, they wanted to create a traditional event that would fill a gap in Debrecen’s city centre. The festival will feature almost 50 varieties of gin and rum, including classic flavours as well as spiced and flavoured gins, a range of tonics and cocktails. The musical atmosphere will vary over the two days. On Friday, the focus will be on hits from the 1990s and 2000s. During the day on Saturday, visitors can expect a more relaxed, picnic-style ‘chill’ atmosphere, while the evening will gradually shift towards electronic music and programmes aimed at a younger generation.

The festival is about more than just drinks. Visitors will also be able to choose from food offered by local Debrecen hospitality businesses in the food court set up in Dósa nádor Square. The organisers’ aim is to turn the square into a genuine summer meeting place over the two days, where food, music and the city-centre setting combine to create the festival atmosphere.

The first Debrecen Gin Festival will take place on 14 and 15 August 2026 from 16:00 to midnight in Dósa nádor Square. Admission is free.
