Mowing of Overgrown Weeds to Begin in Debrecen

In the coming days, mowing will begin in several of Debrecen’s green areas. However, this does not mean that all grassed areas will be uniformly cut short: mowing will primarily be carried out where the tall herbaceous vegetation or weed growth makes it necessary.

Due to the summer heat and prolonged dry spell, a significant proportion of the grassed areas in Debrecen, as across the country, has dried out and is currently dormant. The aim is not to create uniformly short, closely mown lawns, but to carry out mowing where it is necessary while leaving other areas unchanged for the time being.

An important consideration in scheduling the current works is preparing for autumn as the municipality hopes that wetter weather will arrive from the beginning of September. The targeted mowing now being carried out will provide a suitable basis for the grass to resume even growth in response to the autumn rains, allowing the green areas to enter the autumn period in a well-maintained condition.

The mowing methods are also being adapted to the dry weather conditions. On larger, continuous areas, grass-cutting machinery fitted with collection systems will be used wherever possible. Under the current dry conditions, these machines generate significantly less dust than strimmer-based mowing and also collect the cut vegetation.

Hand-held strimmer mowing will therefore primarily be used where larger machines cannot operate effectively: in narrow grass verges, confined spaces and around trees, equipment and other obstacles.

The aim at this stage is not to cut back all of the city’s grassed areas completely, but to selectively manage overgrown and weedy areas, minimise dust generated during the work and prepare grassed areas for regeneration in the autumn.
