Automated Warehouse Under Construction at Inpark Debrecen

A subsidiary of CATL, GreenPower Energy Debrecen Kft. has been reported to plan to carry out activities related to the repackaging and reassembly of batteries in a new storage hall developed by state-owned Inpark. Inpark and CATL have now provided Médiacentrum Debrecen with further details about their plans for the new hall, emphasising that no battery cell manufacturing will take place at the facility.

According to Inpark, it is developing the 44,000-square-metre hall in the Southern Industrial Park, with completion expected by the end of October, after which it will lease the facility on a long-term basis to CATL subsidiary GreenPower Energy Debrecen Kft. The company highlighted that advanced industrial automation systems will be used in the building. “The high-specification building will feature advanced industrial automation systems, which will replace part of the human workforce while providing an even higher level of occupational safety,” Inpark said.

As Inpark stated in its response, the facility’s primary function will be storage, and no manufacturing will take place in the building. The processes will not have significant water or energy requirements, they added.

According to Inpark, responsibility for compliance with environmental and other regulations lies with the tenant, while the competent authorities continuously carry out their inspection duties. The company also stated that CATL and GreenPower Energy Debrecen Kft. would cooperate with the competent authorities throughout both the permitting process and subsequent operations.

In response to Médiacentrum’s enquiry, CATL said that, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Contemporary Amperex Technology Hungary Kft., GreenPower Energy Debrecen Kft. primarily carries out non-manufacturing activities related to CATL’s operations in Hungary, including after-sales services. The company was established to further clarify the functional separation of CATL’s activities in Hungary and optimise its internal operations. According to their response, operations at the facility may begin once all the necessary permits have been obtained. The company expects to employ 94 people by the end of the year.

CATL emphasises that the activities planned by GreenPower Energy Debrecen Kft. will primarily involve assembly, repackaging, machining and logistics. Three main technological activities will be carried out at the facility: battery repackaging, module- and pack-level reassembly, and the operation of a machining workshop. CATL stresses that no battery cell manufacturing will take place at the facility, nor will electrode production, electrolyte handling or any electrochemical technological processes forming part of cell manufacturing be carried out. Furthermore, the electrochemical operation of the batteries will not be altered during the planned operations.
