Kálvin Gallery to Host Photo Exhibition on Greenland

István Bán’s exhibition titled “Greenland, a Story Encased in Ice” will open at the Kálvin Gallery at 11:00 a.m. on 11 October.

István Bán was born in Berehove into a Reformed family with several generations of ministers. Travel writing captivated him from an early age, but as he had no opportunity to travel at the time, he collected the colourful world beyond his immediate surroundings on postage stamps.

Later, he continued his university studies in Tartu, Estonia. When the country regained its independence and the borders opened, his camera became his travelling companion. He has now visited thirty-six countries, with Greenland as one of the most significant destinations of his travels so far. “I will never forget the moment I entered a tiny Protestant church in Greenland. Outside, enormous icebergs drifted quietly in the fjord, while the church was surrounded by ice, sea and infinite silence. Coming from a family of Reformed ministers, it was a particularly profound experience to discover that faith and human togetherness mean the same thing in even the most remote corners of the world: hope, humility and a sense of home,” he recalled.

He captured his experiences in Greenland in photographs, which form the exhibition opening at the Great Church’s Kálvin Gallery. The exhibition reveals Greenland’s unique natural beauty while also expressing his respect for the indigenous people of Greenland. “I think of Greenland’s indigenous people with deep respect and solidarity. For centuries, they have preserved their culture, traditions and identity on this harsh yet magnificent land. As a Hungarian from Transcarpathia, I feel particularly close to communities that remain attached to their roots and peacefully and with dignity defend their identity, freedom and future. A love of one’s homeland connects people anywhere in the world,” István Bán said.

On display until 15 November 2026, the exhibition will be opened by Károly Fekete, Bishop of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District.
