BMW Group Plant Debrecen Hosts International Factory Tour for Press
The bodywork of BMW vehicles manufactured in Debrecen undergoes several stages, including pre-treatment, cathodic dip coating in immersion tanks, and corrosion protection. These processes were among the topics discussed during a factory tour organised for members of the press. The Debrecen facility is the first BMW plant to feature a 50-hectare solar park. Energy not used over the weekend is stored in an 1,800-hectolitre tank and then utilised on Mondays to heat water for the paint shop, thereby avoiding waste.
The international press event focused on sustainability – a key priority for the brand – as well as the plant’s state-of-the-art technology. “All technologies used by BMW globally are available here. In addition, we have taken development to an entirely new level. We have 500 developers in Cluj-Napoca who regularly come here so that we can develop together. The key to all of this is artificial intelligence,” highlighted Hans-Peter Kemser, President and CEO of BMW Group Plant Debrecen.
The opportunities offered by AI are being utilised both in the vehicles themselves and throughout the facility. BMW Group Plant Debrecen was the world’s first factory planned and constructed with a complete digital twin that began operating virtually before the physical buildings had even been completed. Speaking about the BMW model being produced in Debrecen, project manager Kay Kindermann said that being inside the vehicles built there creates a unique sensation unlike anything he has experienced in any other car. “If you are not driving and are simply a passenger, close your eyes. When the car comes to a stop and the driver tells you that you have arrived, only then will you realise that the vehicle has stopped. Its operation is that smooth,” he told the audience.
The company launched its second shift earlier than originally planned due to the success of the iX3, and a third shift could begin operations in the near future.
