City Honours Presented in Debrecen on 23 October 2026

To mark the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence and the 37th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Hungary, the Municipality of Debrecen held a commemorative ceremony at the Kölcsey Centre on 23 October 2026. Following his ceremonial address, Mayor László Papp presented this year’s László Boncz, Csokonai, Gedeon Dóczy, Alfréd Hajós and Hatvani Awards, as well as the Cívis Certificate of Honour of the City of Debrecen.

At the beginning of the ceremony, attendees paid tribute to the person after whom the Görömbei András Hall, the traditional venue for the event, is named. András Görömbei was a Kossuth Prize-winning literary historian, university professor and honorary citizen of Debrecen. His main research interests included literature produced by Hungarian communities beyond the country’s borders and the work of Hungary’s populist writers. Through his life’s work and research, he preserved for future generations the voices and moral convictions of authors who remained committed to the ideals of freedom and national unity even during the darkest years of dictatorship. On the day for remembering the courageous stand against oppression, András Görömbei’s intellectual legacy served as a reminder that freedom must not simply be won but also preserved and protected through the power of culture, education and science.

Mayor László Papp recalled in his ceremonial speech that Debrecen’s General Assembly presents awards twice a year to people who have made significant contributions to the community throughout their lives, based on nominations from the city’s residents. These occasions are 11 April, the city’s day, and 23 October, the celebration of Hungarian freedom. He noted that both dates hold particular historical significance for Debrecen. On 11 April 1693, the city was granted the status of a free royal city, giving it autonomy and allowing its citizens to dispose freely of their property. Seventy years ago, on 23 October 1956, Debrecen was the first city in Hungary where university students took to the streets against the dictatorship, and where crowds first filled the streets demanding freedom. “It is therefore no exaggeration to say that the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence began in Debrecen,” he emphasised.

The Mayor also spoke about how 23 October is a symbol of freedom for every Hungarian just like 15 March is. He stressed that, for those who took part in the events of 1956, 15 March 1848 was above all the example to follow. As he put it, 23 October 1956 has become a day of freedom for us without diminishing the significance of 15 March. “These symbols of freedom cannot exist without one another. We must preserve, cherish and draw lessons from the memory of those who stood up for Hungarian freedom and made sacrifices for it, as well as from the enduring lessons of their actions,” he said.

László Papp stressed that some people who witnessed, experienced or participated in the revolutionary days are still alive among us. Their memories represent living history, and we must not allow any part of it to be lost. We should therefore continue talking to them, recording their memories and passing them on to future generations for as long as we have the opportunity. He added that we must pass on the legacy of the people of 1956: the understanding that freedom is more important to us Hungarians than anything else, and that individuals, communities and society are not merely observers of, or victims of, their own fate, but can also shape and determine how it unfolds.

The mayor emphasised that a community can establish the conditions for its own freedom when it recognises the need for cooperation, collective thinking and working together towards a common goal and puts these principles into practice. He said that this idea had always found fertile ground in Debrecen as the city has always been characterised by citizens who are willing and able to work together in agreement towards shared objectives, regardless of their worldview, knowledge, outlook on life or personal circumstances. At the end of his speech, he asked the award recipients and everyone present to remember those who began their struggle seventy years ago so that they and future generations could live in a free country, with free will and independent minds, creating things that are useful, valuable and beautiful for the benefit of all.

In keeping with tradition, the Municipality of Debrecen presents awards on 23 October to recognise outstanding achievements and life’s work that have created lasting value.

László Boncz Award

The László Boncz Award of the City of Debrecen may be presented by the General Assembly in recognition of outstanding professional work and life achievements serving the public in the fields of child protection, child welfare, basic social services, specialised care involving personal assistance, primary and specialist healthcare, and health promotion.

This year, by decision of the General Assembly, the award was presented to Lajos Buzás, President of the Association of State-Cared-For Children from Bihar County, in recognition of his dedicated and exemplary work in child protection and support for disadvantaged people; and Anikó Tóthné Elek, a specialist care worker at the Family and Child Welfare Centre of the Municipality of Debrecen, in recognition of her conscientious work on behalf of children and families, exemplary professional commitment and outstanding dedication.

Lajos Buzás, founder and president of the Association of State-Cared-For Children from Bihar County, has spent two decades working to support children growing up in state care with unwavering commitment. His personal experience lends particular authenticity to his mission as he grew up in similar circumstances himself and therefore understands first-hand the difficulties and challenges faced by children who grow up without family support. He works for the National Child Protection Specialist Service, meaning that he contributes to protecting children not only through his voluntary and civic activities but also in his everyday professional role. He regularly organises large-scale charity campaigns, donation drives, sporting events and cultural programmes. He is behind the Mowgli Cup sporting event and the highly successful annual chocolate donation campaign in Debrecen. His work and dedicated service to children in need have earned him several local and professional awards. A short documentary film entitled Zacisok has also been made about his life and activities. The film achieved considerable success, winning third prize at the Cultural Films Festival in 2023 and also being screened at Debrecen’s Malter Film Festival. Through his active compassion and selfless willingness to help, Lajos Buzás sets an example for the generations that follow him.

Anikó Tóthné Elek’s professional career has been defined by her commitment to children, her desire to help others, her exceptional capacity for hard work and her humanity. She has a varied professional background: she initially trained as a tailor and dressmaker, then became a nursery assistant before qualifying as a child and youth supervisor. She began working at the infant home on Kartács Street in 1985, where she carried out her duties with great dedication and high professional standards for twenty years. In 2005, she joined the team at the Temporary Home for Families on Mester Street, where she continues to work as a specialist care worker. Over the course of her nearly four-decade career, she has helped, supported and improved the lives of thousands of children and parents. One of the greatest strengths of her work is that she regards care not simply as a job requirement but as a genuine vocation. She can always be relied upon when help is needed and willingly shares her professional knowledge and experience with others. When required, she also provides cover to a high standard at the Temporary Home for Families on Böszörményi Road and the Temporary Home for Children. In recognition of her work, she received a professional award from the Family and Child Welfare Centre of the Municipality of Debrecen on the occasion of Social Work Day in 2025.

Csokonai Award

The Csokonai Award of the City of Debrecen is presented by General Assembly in recognition of outstanding achievements and life’s work that have created lasting value in cultural life, particularly in public collections, cultural education, the arts and the social sciences.

By decision of the General Assembly, this year’s recipients were Hangfogó Band, recognised for several decades of artistic work enriching Debrecen’s popular music scene; and Professor Róbert Keményfi, Director of the Institute of Ethnology and Museology at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen, recognised for his outstanding contribution to Hungarian ethnographic scholarship and to scientific research and education.

József Tóth, bassoonist teacher and honorary director, was unable to collect his Csokonai Award last year because he was performing at the time. Granted in recognition of his outstanding professional, music teaching and leadership contributions to Debrecen’s musical life, the award was therefore presented to him at this year’s ceremony.

Led by Péter Mohos, Hangfogó Band has been one of the main pillars of the popular music scene in Debrecen since its formation in 1985. Alongside contemporary hits, heir repertoire includes Hungarian and international pop-rock classics that appeal to generations of listeners and invite them to dance. Concert programmes with a theatrical character and outstanding artistic merit also occupy a prominent place in their work. Over the past decades, the band has performed at numerous cultural institutions, universities and festivals throughout Hungary, while also achieving significant international success as a cultural ambassador for Debrecen. For the people of Debrecen, its name has become synonymous with shared experiences and a respect for live music. From 1993 to 2006, the band ran its own club, Hangfogó Music Pub, which became the city’s leading meeting place for people looking to socialise and dance no Friday evenings. Continuing this tradition, the band still organises sold-out retro parties in Debrecen every month. Alongside its club activities, the band remains a regular and indispensable presence at the city’s most important social and charity events, including the Rotary Ball, university freshmen’s balls, the Lawyers’ Ball, the Armenian Ball, the Hungarian Ball and the Catholic Ball, among many others. The award was accepted by the band’s leader, Péter Mohos.

Professor Róbert Keményfi graduated in 1993 from Kossuth Lajos University with qualifications in geography teaching and ethnography. He has taught at the university since 1994 and has been a professor there since 2012. He serves as an editor or editorial board member for several journals. Fourteen of his students have completed PhD degrees under his supervision, several of whom now work at cultural institutions in Debrecen. His scholarly work comprises 236 publications, including studies on the history of the University of Debrecen and ethnographic scholarship, as well as the ethnographic aspects of the First World War and the Treaty of Trianon. He has also researched the ethnography of the historic Bihar County and the Hungarian population of the Fekete-Körös Valley. A significant proportion of his work addresses ethnographic and cartographic questions concerning the spatial organisation of ethnic and religious communities. Between 2010 and 2015, he served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Debrecen, followed by a term as Dean from 2017 to 2026. In the latter role, he supported city-wide programmes and initiatives such as the Debrecen Summer School, the establishment of the Ilona Várhalmi Award and the activities of the Sol Oriens Choir. He has initiated and oversees the university’s museology training programme, which is unique in Hungary and aims to ensure a new generation of specialists for public collections. In recognition of his work, Róbert Keményfi has received numerous awards.

József Tóth is a prominent figure in Debrecen’s musical life. A nationally recognised musician, he has made outstanding contributions to music education at primary, secondary and higher levels for more than forty years. His students’ achievements in national competitions attest to his success; in recognition of his work preparing them, he has received fourteen special awards for competition coaching. Alongside his teaching, he headed the woodwind department at the Debrecen School of Music for twenty-three years and served as its director for fifteen years. He continues to support the institution’s community as a performing arts teacher and honorary director. His contribution also helped bring about the successful renovation of the school building. Throughout his career as a music teacher and leader, he has developed strong links with Debrecen’s cultural and educational institutions. As a performer with Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen, he has appeared in more than 1,500 concerts with the Kodály Choir and the symphony orchestra. He received the Simonffy Award in 2010, the Bonis Bona – For the Talents of the Nation Award in 2013, and both the County Prima Award and the Komlóssy Award in 2019.

Gedeon Dóczy Award

The General Assembly of the Municipality of Debrecen may present the Gedeon Dóczy Award in recognition of outstanding and dedicated teaching, educational, pastoral or leadership work in public education, as well as exceptional contributions that support such work and significant lifetime achievements.

This year’s recipients were Andrea Csapóné Tóth, a teacher at Árpád Vezér Primary School in Debrecen, recognised for her outstanding professional work and exemplary teaching; József Fekete, Head of Medgyessy Ferenc Secondary School, Art Secondary School and Technical School, recognised for exemplary institutional leadership and outstanding professional and teaching work in public education; and István Németh, Deputy Head of the Péchy Mihály Construction Technical School within the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, recognised for modernising technical vocational education, exemplary leadership and teaching, and outstanding achievements in educational innovation.

Andrea Csapóné Tóth has worked as a teacher since 1989 and has taught at Árpád Vezér Primary School in Debrecen since 1994, regularly serving as a class teacher. Through her work, she has played an active role in shaping the school’s identity and its position within Debrecen’s educational landscape. In addition to classroom teaching, she is one of the key contributors to the school’s internal life. She makes a substantial professional contribution to developing the institution’s educational documents and organising and delivering programmes involving the whole school. Alongside her teaching and educational duties, she enjoys staging performances that give talented pupils opportunities to develop and showcase their abilities in this area. In response to the challenges of the modern age, she considers continuing professional development essential and has attended numerous courses and training programmes, broadening her knowledge considerably. For more than ten years, she has maintained contact with the children living in the residential home in Székelyhíd run by the Saint Francis Foundation of Déva, established by Csaba Böjte. She also coordinates the collection and delivery of donations offered to support the children.

József Fekete has worked in education for nearly forty years, including twenty years as a headteacher or head of institution. He has sought to create an inclusive learning environment at his school. He keeps his professional knowledge up to date, adapts exceptionally well to continuous change and follows the latest research findings, incorporating them into everyday teaching practice. Under his leadership, Medgyessy Ferenc Secondary School, Art Secondary School and Technical School has developed into a nationally recognised institution for arts education. He has established close cooperation with higher education institutions, particularly universities specialising in the arts. As a master teacher, public education expert and professional examination chair, he has been actively involved in educational administration from the outset of his career. His work in education has included serving as an adviser to the Minister of Education, working as an expert on students’ rights, coordinating international projects and organising national subject competitions. He contributed to the development of the comprehensive talent-development programme known as the “Debrecen Model” and introduced a talent-development programme at the secondary school he leads. Since its establishment, he has supported the work of the National Teachers’ Chamber as both a regional and national delegate. In 2013, he received the Bonis Bona and Holló László Awards, followed by the Rotary Award in 2019 and the Ágoston Trefort Award in 2025.

István Németh has devoted nearly four decades to Hungarian public and vocational education. He began his teaching career in 1987 at the Ózd Secondary School of Economics. In 1989, he joined the predecessor institution of the Péchy Mihály Construction Technical School in Debrecen, where he has remained a key member of the teaching staff and has served as Deputy Head since 2002. He qualified as a secondary-school teacher of mathematics and physics at the Faculty of Science of Eötvös Loránd University. He subsequently gained a qualification in secondary-school information technology teaching at Kossuth Lajos University and later completed qualifications in educational leadership and a postgraduate professional examination at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He also has considerable experience in adult education. As Deputy Head, he has been involved for more than two decades in the professional, educational and organisational management of the Péchy Mihály Construction Technical School. He has an in-depth understanding of the institution’s operations, traditions and community, while also supporting new professional and leadership initiatives as a constructive partner. He puts his decades of experience at the service of the school community in a collaborative and supportive way. His professional expertise and considered opinions are valuable both in everyday operations and in strategic decision-making. In 2020, he received the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

Alfréd Hajós Award

The Alfréd Hajós Award of the City of Debrecen may be presented in recognition of outstanding sporting achievements; exceptional work by physical education teachers, sports managers and coaches; high-quality contributions to competitive and recreational sport, youth development, physical education or school sport; and activities or lifetime achievements that create lasting value.

This year, the award went to Sugár Katinka Battai, a Hungarian world champion sabre fencer and Olympian who competes for the fencing section of DEAC, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in Hungarian and international fencing and her exemplary conduct as an athlete; Györgyi Gyulai, a figure-skating coach and head of the figure-skating section of the Debrecen Sports School, in recognition of her exemplary work in establishing competitive figure skating in Debrecen, developing young talent and promoting ice sports; and Lajos Lente, a physical education teacher at the University of Debrecen’s Institute of Sport Science Coordination, in recognition of his decades of professional and leadership work in football and youth development, and his outstanding achievements in nurturing young football talent.

Fencer Sugár Katinka Battai achieved the best results of her career during the current season, reaching joint first place in the world rankings as a result. She returned from the World Cup events with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal and won the European circuit. At the end of 2025, she was named Female Fencer of the Year. As an athlete from Debrecen, she represents the city, achieving the best result in the history of Debrecen fencing when she won an individual bronze medal and team gold at the World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong. In 2023, she received the Hajdú-Bihar County Prima Award and was named Hungarian Fencer of the Year in both 2023 and 2025. DEAC named her its Sportswoman of the Year in 2025 and 2026. Alongside her elite sporting career, she is studying at the University of Debrecen.

Györgyi Gyulai came to Debrecen in 2004, around the time the city’s Ice Rink opened, and effectively established the foundations of competitive figure skating in the city from scratch. She founded and leads the Jégkarc Association, established in 2004, and has also headed and coached the figure-skating section of the Debrecen Sports School for more than twenty years. Thanks to her work, Debrecen has gained a place on the national and international figure-skating map. Throughout her coaching career, she has trained numerous national champions in youth age groups, medal winners and members of national squads. Alongside competitive sport, she plays a major role in promoting skating as a healthy recreational activity. Through the “Kori-suli” programme and teaching system at the Debrecen Ice Rink, thousands of nursery and schoolchildren in the city learn the basics of skating every year under her professional guidance. Her work not only develops successful athletes but also builds community, creates lasting value and contributes to the long-term enrichment of the city’s sporting culture.

Lajos Lente studied physical education at the Juhász Gyula Teacher Training College in Szeged before qualifying as a therapeutic physical education teacher at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Science of Semmelweis University. He holds UEFA B and UEFA A licences required by the Hungarian Football Federation, as well as the UEFA Elite Youth A qualification. After his active playing career, he took up a position as a physical education teacher at the University of Debrecen, but he never left football behind. He devoted his life to the sport, above all to youth development. In 2003, he launched the first age group of the Loki Football School with enormous enthusiasm. Many children from Debrecen, from the 1999 to the 2002 birth cohorts, began discovering and developing a love for the sport under his guidance. Between 2004 and 2007, he tirelessly coached three age groups, achieving significant national and international results with his teams. He spent the most time working with players born in 2001, whose development from the very beginning reflected the quality of his coaching. The team remained unbeaten in the Interliga championship for several years, then finished first in the north-eastern group of the NB II U13 league. In the 2015 season, the team went on to win the NB I championship. In 2025, the Hungarian University and College Sports Federation awarded Lajos Lente the Ferenc Csík Silver Plaque.

Hatvani Award

The Hatvani Award of the City of Debrecen is presented by the General Assembly in recognition of outstanding work, scientific activity and lifetime achievements that create lasting value and lay the foundations for the future development of the city, particularly in the natural sciences, healthcare, social services, urban planning and urban development.

By decision of the General Assembly, this year’s award was presented to Professor László Csernoch, Director of the Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Debrecen, in recognition of his outstanding research in Hungary and internationally, as well as his high-standard teaching and institutional leadership at the university; Professor László Módis, an ophthalmologist at the Eye Clinic of the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen, in recognition of his outstanding clinical and research work spanning several decades and his achievements in teaching future generations of doctors and providing patient care; and Professor Béla Szabó, Head of Department and university professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Debrecen, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to legal scholarship and his exceptional research and teaching work in legal education in Debrecen.

Professor László Csernoch graduated with a degree in physics from Kossuth Lajos University in Debrecen in 1985. He subsequently worked at the Department of Physiology as a scientific assistant, junior research associate and research fellow. He was appointed assistant lecturer in 1992, senior lecturer in 1993 and associate professor in 1998. He defended his candidate’s dissertation in 1990 and completed his habilitation in 2001. In the same year, he was awarded the title of Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. On 1 July 2005, he was appointed to lead the Department of Physiology, and on 1 September of that year he became a university professor. After joining the department, he became involved in teaching physiology. He contributes to the education of medical, dental, pharmaceutical and molecular biology students in both Hungarian and English. He served as the departmental academic coordinator for pharmacy training and later headed the medical biology specialisation within the molecular biology programme. He has been involved in doctoral education since 1994. He is a founding member and, since 2010, head of the Doctoral School of Molecular Medicine at the University of Debrecen, and is also an external member of the university’s Doctoral School of Informatics. He has received the Faculty of Medicine’s Teacher of the Year award on several occasions and has also been awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit.

Professor László Módis has been a prominent figure in Debrecen’s healthcare, university and scientific communities for nearly four decades. He began his medical career at the Debrecen Eye Clinic. His professional work is closely intertwined with the city, the University of Debrecen and the local community. His work in ophthalmology, particularly in the modern diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the cornea and ocular surface, is recognised nationally and internationally. One of his most significant and lasting contributions to Debrecen was the establishment of the Cornea Bank in 1994, which he has led ever since. The Cornea Bank has played a major role in creating the modern conditions required for corneal transplantation in Debrecen and in making advanced treatment to restore patients’ sight available to them. Since its establishment, he has taught and supervised doctoral students at the Doctoral School of Clinical Medicine of the University of Debrecen. He has served on the leadership of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society since 2004 and is currently its Secretary-General. He also holds leadership positions in several Hungarian and European professional organisations. His honours include the Béla Alberth and Ignác Hirschler commemorative medals of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society, the SHIOL commemorative medal of the Hungarian Society for Intraocular Lens Implantation and Refractive Surgery, the Lajos Markusovszky Award, and recognition for the best publication in the journal Orvosi Hetilap.

Professor Béla Szabó’s teaching, research and academic organisational work is inseparable from the history of legal education in Debrecen over the past thirty years. He played a key role in organising and strengthening the institution when legal education resumed in Debrecen in 1996 after a forced interruption lasting several decades. As Deputy Director and then Director of the Institute of Law and Political Science at Kossuth Lajos University, and later as the first Dean of the Faculty of Law at the successor institution, the University of Debrecen, he helped restore the city’s position as a major and respected centre of legal education in Hungary. He was also the founding director and a former head of the Géza Marton Doctoral School of Law and Political Science. As a recognised researcher in Roman law and legal history, an author of volumes documenting university history and an influential educator who established his own academic school, Professor Szabó has supported the professional development of generations of law students and young researchers. Through his scholarly work, he has also significantly enhanced the national and international standing of the University of Debrecen and the city itself. In 2015, he received the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit. In 2021, he was awarded the Master Teacher Gold Medal, and in 2024 he received a Certificate of Recognition from the Rector of the University of Debrecen.

Cívis Certificate of Honour of the City of Debrecen

The Mayor of Debrecen awarded the Cívis Certificate of Honour of the City of Debrecen to László Oláh, a retired lieutenant colonel and military engineer, and President of the Hajdú-Bihar County organisation of the Imre Nagy Society. The award recognised his outstanding cultural and public activities in preserving the memory and spirit of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence.

László Oláh’s life combines patriotism, military discipline and a deeply humane set of values. As an officer, he learned the meaning of loyalty, the obligations of an oath and the responsibilities of service. When he moved from active military service into civilian life, he brought this unwavering inner compass with him into community work. In 2016, the 60th anniversary of the revolution, he joined the Imre Nagy Society, where he quickly became a driving force within the organisation. Recognising his commitment, members elected him president of the county organisation as early as 2017. In recognition of his work at national level, he is now also a member of the society’s national leadership. His name and tireless efforts are associated with high-quality academic conferences, historical lectures and dignified commemorations that bring the legacy of Hungary’s martyrs closer to people today. Through exceptionally rich exhibitions based on his own research, he makes the past tangible and accessible, whether exploring the events of 1956 in Debrecen, the heroic work of nurses during the revolution or the decisive turning points in the history of the Hungarian nation. His work is characterised by deep modesty and unwavering determination. He has a remarkable ability to build bridges between generations, bring partner organisations together and engage young people, ensuring that the ideals of Imre Nagy and the freedom fighters of 1956 remain alive for generations to come.

Following the presentation of the awards, Mayor László Papp congratulated the recipients and thanked them for allowing him, on behalf of the city, to present the honours awarded by the General Assembly. He also expressed his gratitude that they had been able to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution together at the ceremonial assembly. He said that Debrecen was home to many remarkable people whose careers and life stories deserved recognition. He emphasised that the value of an award was fundamentally determined by two things: who it came from and who presented it, and who received it. Receiving an award from the City of Debrecen was in itself a special gift, but the recipients’ outstanding achievements, work and life journeys also gave the honours their value.

The Mayor stressed that Debrecen could be proud to have such outstanding people contributing to its future. The short films presented about the award recipients offered a remarkably valuable snapshot of the city, showcasing achievements across a wide range of fields, from child protection to the arts and sport, as well as science, education and the preservation of traditions. As he put it, these life stories demonstrate the extraordinary things Debrecen can achieve thanks to the people who live and work there.
