Debrecen Sights Highlighted by Tourism Expert
Tourism plays an important role in the Hungarian economy, according to tourism expert Róbert Richárd Kiss, speaking on Médiacentrum Debrecen’s HírPONT. He noted that the construction of accommodation facilities is regulated by market demand, and if a region attracts significant interest, new hotels will also be able to operate successfully.
Large crowds had already gathered at the main entrance of the Campus Festival on its opening day on Wednesday. Festival-goers arrived from all corners of the country. The 18th Campus Festival is the largest summer event in Eastern Hungary, attracting 120,000 visitors to the Great Forest last year. According to the Róbert Richárd Kiss, domestic tourism has remained strong despite the strengthening of the Hungarian forint. In his view, this is due to the wide range of destinations and experiences available within the country. “We can see that Hungary offers plenty of experiences that make it worthwhile travelling to destinations such as Lake Balaton or the Debrecen region, where visitors can enjoy numerous attractions, from the Flower Carnival and Aquaticum to the Great Forest. The Déri Museum and the Great Reformed Church are also among the many unmissable sights awaiting tourists here,” he highlighted.
In recent months, an exceptionally severe drought has created a critical situation at Lake Velence. Róbert Richárd Kiss said that local hospitality businesses are also feeling the impact of the low water levels, as they have discouraged many people from visiting the area. There used to be lakes around Debrecen that attracted considerable tourist traffic 20 years ago, but have since disappeared are visited mainly by hikers today.
Tourism provides employment for 420,000 people in Hungary. In response to a question from Médiacentrum Debrecen, the expert said that the SZÉP Card generated HUF 480 billion in turnover last year, and domestic tourism has maintained its momentum this year as well. Hungary’s hotel industry has undergone significant development, and the construction of accommodation facilities is always determined by market forces. “A city of this size needs a plentiful supply of accommodation. I believe that every new accommodation facility increases overall capacity. As capacity increases, providers are compelled to fill those places, which in turn leads to growth in overall visitor numbers,” summarised Róbert Richárd Kiss.
According to the tourism expert, travellers’ primary consideration is value for money. This is followed by the quality of services provided and whether the promised experiences are delivered.
