Children Learn Through Experience at Agora Science Centre’s Summer Camp

Solar energy, water purification, and waste management – participants in the Green Challenge camp at Agora Science Centre are exploring the natural sciences through hands-on experiments. Sustainability is at the heart of the activities, providing students taking part in the City Talent Development Programme with experience-based learning opportunities about the fascinating world of nature.

Using an electronics kit, the children attending the camp built a solar-powered device. Through this practical task, they were introduced to how solar panels work and the fundamentals of harnessing renewable energy. “We are building a device powered by green energy that functions as a fan, provides light and also keeps time,” said Olivér Orbázi.

The Green Challenge science camp has been organised for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils participating in the Debrecen School District Centre’s City Talent Development Programme. Sustainability is the central theme of the activities: throughout the week, students can take part in practical tasks related to renewable energy sources, waste management and water conservation. “Building a water filter is one of the most important topics, and it is something that particularly interests the children. The use and purification of water are especially important today, just as the management of plastic waste is a key issue that must be addressed,” emphasised Zsófia Hajduk, Professional Leader at Agora Science Centre.

At the Botanical Garden, the children explored local plant and animal life through a series of quiz-based activities. The free camp has been organised by Agora for the second consecutive year with the support of the Ministry of the Domestic Affairs. The aim of the programme is to help participants deepen their knowledge of the natural sciences through experience-based activities. “This age group is especially close to our hearts: they are open-minded, curious and full of ideas that help shape our activities. They often create devices and solutions that an adult might never think of,” highlighted Viktória Bacsó Borbélyné, Director of the Agora Science Centre.

This year, 300 students will have the opportunity to take part in Agóra’s programme, with weekly sessions running throughout the summer. The organisers hope that, through playful and engaging activities, children will develop a mindset that places sustainability at its centre.
