Once again the Debrecen Flower Festival awaits everyone with great programmes

As summer draws to a close, Hungary’s second-largest city, Debrecen, transforms into a vibrant bouquet of colours and fragrances during the annual Debrecen Flower Carnival. Scheduled for August 15-20, 2025, this event is set to be a spectacular showcase of floral artistry, cultural heritage, and community spirit.

The 20th of August is the national and state holiday of Hungary and the anniversary of the consecration of Stephen I of Hungary. In Debrecen, it is also the day of the Flower Carnival, a real attraction, drawing in visitors from across the country and internationally ever since it was first organised in 1966. Today the carnival is far more than just a parade of spectacular floral compositions and international artistic ensembles,  it is a week-long colourful programme of events where visitors can find the entertainment that appeals to them most.

Tune into this year’s parade via the fascinating and enjoyable Carnival Week programmes starting on the 15th of August. Take a look at the many colourful and fascinating programmes awaiting for you in Debrecen!

Debrecen Flower Carnival Programmes in 2025

“The Road of the Gold” Exhibition Opening August 15, 5:00 p.m. at the Déri Museum
The 700-year history of the Hungarian gold forint, presentation of gold coins, monetary relics and cultural heritage. The aim of the exhibition is to present the historical significance, economic and cultural role of the gold forint in Hungary.

Batthyany Street Flower Fest 15 August, 5.00 p.m. – 9.30 p.m. at Batthyany Street

The Debrecen Creative Community also awaits visitors with colourful programmes during the carnival week on Batthyanyi Street.

Handicrafts market 15-20, 10.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m. August at Kossuth Square

As part of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, Kossuth Square will host a vibrant market throughout the week.

Light Painting 15-20 August, 8.30 p.m. – 12.00 a.m. at Kossuth Square

During the  Debrecen Flower Carnival Week, visitors can enjoy a magical Light Painting experience in the heart of the city at Kossuth Square. This visually stunning event transforms the square into a glowing canvas of color and creativity after sunset.

Night of the Classics – 15 August in downtown Debrecen 

As the traditional opening event of the Flower Carnival festivities, the Kodály Philharmonic Debrecen will once again fill Debrecen’s emblematic venues with classical music this year! 

Community flower float decoration – 15-20 August at Dósa nádor Square

Anyone can join the community flower float decoration this year, bringing strawflowers, live flowers, or potted plants. Additionally, on 16, 17, and 18 August, flower arranging workshops at the Kölcsey Centre offer participants a chance to create handmade ornaments for the float.

The “City is Dancing” – 15-20 August at various locations in Debrecen

 “The City is Dancing” (Táncol a város) is a series of free events in Debrecen, featuring Debrecen dance clubs, dance schools and groups. The  programme will be even more spectacular this year with  42 dance groups performing. From Hungarian folk dances to contemporary styles and international dances, there will be a place for all genres.

Communities Square, Career Carnival – Dósa nádor Square will be the hub of carnival week family fun, featuring concerts, dance performances, community programs, and star guest appearances, catering to both children and adults. Career Carnival – August 15–20, from 3.00 p.m. at Dósa Nádor Square
As part of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, the Career Carnival transforms Dósa Nádor Square into a lively hub of music, dance, community, and career opportunities where local companies set up booths daily from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., offering insights into job opportunities and networking in a relaxed, festive setting.

Playmobil Exhibition – August 15–20 at Kölcsey Centre
Playmobil games are characterised by timelessness. The repertoire of role-playing games is truly colorful and wide with Playmobil figures. For the exhibiton tickets can be bought via this link.

Magical Hungary Exhibition – August 15–20 at Kölcsey Centre

As part of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, the Magical Hungary Exhibition showcases the award-winning entries of the Magical Hungary nature photography competition. This stunning display celebrates the beauty of Hungary’s landscapes, wildlife, and natural heritage through the lens of talented photographers.

Billufeszt – August 15–20 at Kölcsey Centre

The highly successful illustration exhibition is now being presented for the fourth time in the Bényi Gallery, and can be visited until September 17th.

VR Carnival – August 15-19 at Baltazár Dezső Square

There’s never been anything like this before! A new programme element is added to the carnival offer: TheVR CARNIVAL is coming! The guys from TheVR will move to Baltazár Dezső Square and will appear live with their popular Happy Hour show every day from August 15 to 19 between 8:30 and 9:30! You can watch it live on site or via online stream – but live is the real deal!

Carnival Atmosphere, Floral Lights – Flower Garden 2025 – 16-17 August at DEMKI Youth House

On August 16, the courtyard of the Youth House will come to life again, as the Flower Garden, one of the most colorful accompanying events of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, will reopen its doors! The free event, which lasts from the afternoon until midnight, is a true celebration: a meeting of dance, music, lights and community experiences in a special location, embedded in a floral landscape.

Carnival Week with the Great Church – August 16-20 at Kossuth Square, Mélusz Chapel and the Great Church

The heart of Debrecen comes alive with vibrant music, cultural performances, and community spirit.

Vidám Manók Concert (Happy Elves) 16 August, 6.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

The orchestra, which has been operating since 2010, is visiting Debrecen again, this time to one of the most colourful venues of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, showcasing cheerful melodies and lovely lyrics, promoting friendship, togetherness, and nature love. The interactive concert is perfect for families.

Concert of Szigeti Juli Band – 16 August 8.00 p.m.  at Dósa nádor Square

The Szigeti Juli band is set to energise the Debrecen Flower Carnival stage with an unmissable concert featuring jazz brass, swing rhythms, and electronic grooves. Szigeti Juli captivates with her vocals, performing original pieces and reimagined hits. Their debut album, released by Electro Swing Thing, has garnered millions of Spotify streams, making this modern yet retro sound an enticing experience for fans of electronic and jazz music.

75th Anniversary Gala of the Debrecen Folk Ensemble – “From Moldova to Moldova” – 16 August, 9.00 p.m. at Kossuth Square 

The 75th anniversary gala of the Debrecen Folk Ensemble is one of the most heartfelt celebrations of the Debrecen Flower Carnival. It is an evening where tradition, community and intergenerational knowledge become a celebration on stage. The celebratory show entitled “From Moldavia to Moldavia”, is a special, grand dance-music journey through the folk culture of the Hungarian people and nationalities of the Carpathian Basin. The gala is free to attend.

Concert of The Biebers band – 16 August 10.00 p.m.  at Dósa nádor Square

 The award winning band, The Biebers, will perform a concert featuring their old hits and new songs from their EP. The full band, including saxophone, drums, guitar, and vocals, will be present, aiming for an energetic, stylish, and surprising atmosphere, with a concert guaranteed to get everyone moving.

Concert of Alma Ensemble – 17 August 6.00 p.m. – 7.00 p.m.  at Dósa nádor Square

The Alma Ensemble started with adult music but gained popularity through a surprise children’s concert, leading to new requests. With multiple Fonogram nominations and over 300 million YouTube downloads, their hit “Ma van a szülinapom” is the most shared Hungarian content on Facebook. They’ve also contributed to popular cartoons, including “Bogyó és Babóca” and theme songs for “Khumba” and “Manu the Swallow.” Performing 250-300 sold-out concerts annually, they are poised to entertain at the Debrecen Flower Carnival!

NightRide 2025 – 17 August, 7.30 p.m. – 9.00 p.m. starting at the Reformed Great Church at Kossuth Square

Let’s light up the summer night in Debrecen together! In 2025, Debrecen’s brightest cycling event, the Night Ride, will return with a renewed route, even more spectacular, even louder and, if possible, with more participants on 17 August.

Concert of Ádám Szabó – 17 August  8.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

Ádám Szabó, has achieved significant milestones in his career since  talent show Megasztár in 2019. The charismatic young talent is preparing a real summer-ending concert to perform his well-known songs but of course there are also surprises to be expected.

Elvis Show  – A joint production of the Debrecen Big Band and Valcer Dance Studio – 17 August, 9.00 p.m. at Kossuth Square 

An evening where rock ‘n’ roll legend Elvis Presley, born 90 years ago, who is still one of the world’s most famous and influential musical icons, will come to life.  The concert will be enriched with spectacular choreographies by the dancers of the Valcer Dance Studio, who have been working with the Debrecen Big Band for more than two decades. The show is free to attend.

Concert of Rebeka Balogh – 17 August  9.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

Valéria Balogh Rebeka, winner of “Female Voice of the Year” on talent show”Megasztár 2024,” will perform her own songs at a carnival concert in Debrecen, showcasing her unique and powerful voice to the audience.

 Concert of Tamás Molnár – 17 August  10.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

Tamás Molnár, a Hungarian pop music artist and award-winning solo artist, will perform in Debrecen with an orchestra. His second solo album, “Sehovavaló,” has over 10 million views and features collaborations and popular hits. The concert promises a heartfelt, dynamic experience.

Concert of Abrakazabra – 18 August, 7.00 p.m. at Kossuth Square

One of the most energetic concerts of the Debrecen Flower Carnival week is coming to Kossuth Square: Abrakazabra, Hungary’s most successful session band, celebrates its 26th birthday with a wild summer evening concert! The concert is guaranteed to be unique, energetic and full of emotions, a real celebration for everyone who loves live music, professionalism and a real show. The concert  is free to attend.

Children Concert of Debrecen Garrison Band and Instrumnents Show – 18 August, 6.00 p.m.. at Dósa nádor Square

The Debrecen Garrison Band will host a special children’s concert and instrument demonstration that promises fun, learning, and musical inspiration for all ages.

Concert of Tom White & the Mad Circus – 18 August, 8.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

Tom White & the Mad Circus, prominent figures in the Hungarian rockabilly scene, are back in Debrecen! Known for over 120 concerts a year, they gained fame in 2018 on X-Faktor. They’re ready to wow the carnival crowd with acrobatic moves, a vintage vibe, and rockabilly versions of retro hits. Get ready to experience ’90s Hungarian hits like never before—no one will be able to sit still!

Concert of SunCity Brass  – 18 August 10.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

The band is a unique formation that combines traditional wind instruments with electronic music styles. Behind the DJ/keyboard is a complete brass section: three trumpets, a trombone, a bass trumpet and a sousaphone bring the rhythms to life. The energetic performance style and special instrumentation of the group are guaranteed to enchant you.

Hungarian Landscape Picture – Debrecen University Flower City August 18-22 at 1 Egyetem Square, in front of the main building of the University of Debrecen

The University of Debrecen will join the Debrecen Flower Carnival Flower City program in 2025. This year, we will present the diversity and main characteristics of Hungarian garden culture without claiming to be complete. This year’s flower carnival planting evokes the regional gardens found in Hungary: we can see a mountain landscape wildflower garden, we can admire a lowland farm garden with drought-tolerant plants and a vegetable garden, and a Mediterranean-style flower garden presenting the southern Hungarian landscape will also be located in front of the university’s main building. In addition to the gardens, the statues of the fountain opposite the building will also be given a floral robe.

Carnival Week 18-20 August at the Small Reformed Church

Visitors to the Small Reformed Church can enjoy an array of unique experiences: breathtaking aerial views of Debrecen’s illuminated skyline, the medieval atmosphere of its centuries-old bell towers, the original-condition Kiszel organ’s exceptional sound, and special presentations revealing the secrets of the church.

Pély Barna 50 – Lifework Concert – 18 August, 9.00 p.m. at Kossuth Square 

One of the special stops of this year’s concert programme of the Flower Carnival is the “Pély Barna 50” concert, which invites the audience on a real musical journey. Barna Pély has been a defining and versatile figure in Hungarian pop music for over 25 years. The evening will be one of the highlights of the anniversary year, which is not only about his musical career, but also speaks to an entire generation. The concert  is free to attend.

Wyrfarkas concert – 19 August 8.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

Debrecen rock band, founded by DVSC footballers, is back with a hard, riffing live performance, promising a powerful concert experience. The audience can get ready for a real crush, as one of Debrecen’s hardest rock bands knows no compromise when they take the stage.

Made about Marylin Concert  – 18 August  9.00 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square

Dénes Dávid’s band is known for its unconventional alternative rock sound, featuring fuzz guitar riffs, thumping bass, characterful drum grooves, and a powerful vocal. Their hypnotic melodies and ethereal atmosphere make them a great rock party. Join if you seek deep, uplifting musical experiences or simply wish to enjoy an extraordinary rock party.

Ruzsa Magdi Concert – 19 August, 9.00 p.m.  at Kossuth Square 

One of the country’s most popular singers is one of the most anticipated performers at the Flower Carnival this year! She is coming to Debrecen with an unforgettable summer evening concert, her oeuvre, hits and special stage presence guarantee true musical magic. Magdi Rúzsa has been a star in the pop industry for 20 years now, and it is no coincidence that she was awarded the GLAMOR Women of the Year Icon category this year. The concert  is free to attend.

Morning parade of the Debrecen Flower Carnival – 20 August, 7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m starting from Rózsa Street

In addition to the flower floats, dance groups, civil organizations, and creative communities will also play a prominent role this year. German, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese, Brazilian, and Greek dance groups will also add color to the carnival parade this year. A community flower float is being prepared with the involvement of the city’s residents!

The morning carnival parade starts at 7:30 a.m. from Rózsa Street and ends at 11:30 a.m. on Egyetem Square. The concert  is free to attend.

Carnival Fun Run – 20 August ,  07:45 a.m. starting from Baltazár Dezső Square

The most exciting day of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, 20 August, kicks off with the most colorful run of the year! Runners will start from Baltazár Dezső Square, and after a joint countdown, the colourful powder flies into the air at the same time, and then the adventure run starts from under the huge colourful cloud. 

Flower floats and Old Timer exhibition – 20 August, 3:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. at  Nagyerdei Stadium, northern event space

Following the parade, the flower floats and old-timers that will be marching along the procession can be viewed up close from early afternoon, while the audience is entertained by performances by folklore groups, making the experience more colourful, accompanied by a pleasant carnival atmosphere and invigorating music and dance productions.

Carnival Fiesta – August 20 from 7.00 p.m., at the Nagyerdei Stadium, northern event space

The northern event space of Nagyerdei Stadium will transform into a vibrant celebration! For the very first time a spectacular evening event following the fun-filled daytime programmes will be held with a vehicle exhibition, music and dance.

Evening Parade 20 August 8.00 p.m. – 9.30 p.m. 

The highlight of the Carnival celebration will be the evening parade but this will be preceded by a whole week of carnival events, with an incredibly rich programme of activities, joined by several institutions and civil communities of the city.

Halott Pénz Concert – 20 August 10.00 p.m. – 11.00 p.m. at Kossuth Square

Prepare for an electrifying surprise,  “Halott Pénz” band is set to light up the stage in the vibrant heart of Debrecen, bringing the Flower Carnival week to a thrilling conclusion with an unforgettable concert! Experience their dynamic performance as they deliver high-energy hits that resonate with fans, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and celebration.

Botanica Expo – 15-20 August at Dósa nádor Square and Kölcsey Centre

Thanks to last year’s success, the greenest event of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, the free-to-attend BOTANICA Expo, a flower and horticultural exhibition and fair, will be held for the fourth time this year. The long-term goal of the programme is to create an even more natural and sustainable Debrecen.

Galiba Children’s Festival – 18-20 August at Debrecen Amusement Park and Old Town Hall Courtyard 

The Galiba Children’s Festival introduces an expanded programme featuring a new venue at the Old Town Hall courtyard, offering puppet theater, a dance hall, fun programmes, and craft activities. On August 19, children will parade with flower floats, departing from Dósa Nádor Square at 5:00 p.m. and arriving at the Memorial Garden by 6:30 p.m.

Beer by Lake – 15-20 August in the Great Forest at Lake Békás

In the most charming part of the Great Forest, on the shore of Lake Békás, you can spend an entire week in the company of the most diverse Hungarian craft and artisanal beers, alongside refreshments from foreign breweries, including those brewed in the already familiar Czech style. There are also gastronomic and cultural activities available throughout the event, with a variety of food trucks offering culinary delights and beer snacks.

The Debrecen Flower Carnival is so much more than just a flower show; it’s a real celebration of community, culture, art, and nature! Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this magical event is bound to be a memorable experience packed with beauty, joy, and inspiration. So, save the dates August 15-20, 2025 and get ready to dive into the amazing blooms, vibrant colours, and all the fun festivities that Debrecen has to offer!
