Science Brought to the Streets of Debrecen: Exhibition opens on Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Regional Presence
An exhibition titled Pusztán tudomány (“Plain Science”) has opened, presenting the regional presence of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from its beginnings to the present day. The open-air display features a total of 37 posters offering insight into the scientific life of the region. The exhibition, which opened on 23 April 2026, is linked to the 200th anniversaries of the Academy and its library, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Debrecen Academic Committee.
Past, present and future are presented across nearly 40 posters. The Pusztán tudomány exhibition, installed on the fence of the Memorial Garden, celebrates the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and its Debrecen branch. “When we celebrate the 200-year-old Hungarian Academy of Sciences, including the 50-year-old Debrecen Academic Committee, we are truly standing before scientific and cultural values rooted in centuries. However, what we celebrate is not only the past, but also the flourishing present and the promise of the future it holds,” emphasised Tamás Freund.
The choice of venue is no coincidence. The Memorial Garden lies between the Great Reformed Church of Debrecen and the Debrecen Reformed College. The college has served education, science and innovation for nearly 500 years. “In many respects, the Debrecen Reformed College is a memorial site of the intellectual and scientific events of the past 200 years. At the same time, on this occasion I would like to emphasise that we strive not only to honour the past, but also to take part in the scientific life of Debrecen and the region in the present,” said Levente Béla Baráth, Rector of the Debrecen Reformed Theological University.
The 37 posters demonstrate how the scientists and institutions of Debrecen and its region have contributed to Hungary’s scientific life. “The posters line up before us with remarkable individuals of whom we can rightly be proud, while previously unseen curiosities and special features from the results of numerous fields of science are also revealed,” pointed out Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs.
According to Zoltán Bács, Chancellor of the University of Debrecen, the role of science remains decisive today, and the challenges of the future can only be addressed through joint efforts. “Science is changing rapidly today—faster than ever before. We are facing new challenges, whether in technological development, environmental issues or social transformations. We can only respond to these challenges together, by respecting and connecting each other’s knowledge, and in this work the role of the Academy and its regional committees remains indispensable,” he stressed.
The exhibition can be viewed on the fence of the Memorial Garden until 24 August 2026.
