The University of Debrecen is also at the forefront of renewing teacher training
Teacher training has undergone many changes in recent years, and more and more people are choosing it.
The Hungarian teacher training system has been renewed: the new, value-based and practice-oriented model aims to make the teaching profession attractive again and to prepare dedicated teachers who are prepared for the schools of the future. The success of the program is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the number of applicants for teacher training has increased by fifty percent in recent years – and there is particularly high interest at the University of Debrecen.
How is the new teacher training model being built, what experiences has it brought to the University of Debrecen, and what do the students themselves think about it? This was discussed in Debrecen Televison’s (DTV) CampusTalk program by Gyöngyi Szilágyi-Asztalos, Acting Director General of the Directorate General of Education of the University of Debrecen, and Péter Forisek, Director General of the Teacher Training Center of the University of Debrecen.
In 2013, there was a major reform of teacher training, when the divided training was changed back to undivided.
“Compared to 2022, the number of people admitted to teacher training increased by fifty percent, and three times as many applicants were admitted to short-cycle teacher training nationwide as three years ago. There is also great interest in the renewed teacher training at the University of Debrecen, and in the 2025 general and supplementary admission procedure, a total of 476 applicants were admitted to one of the DE’s teacher training programs,” explained Péter Forisek.
The entire Hungarian higher education system has been renewed in the past ten years, the main objective of which is a practice-oriented approach and the acquisition of up-to-date and marketable knowledge.
“One of the most important elements of the program is the recently launched, nationwide teacher training, which will allow the teaching career and value-based professional training to come into even greater focus. In the new teacher training, the teacher training curricula had to be specifically linked to the National Core Curriculum and the specialist framework curricula,” revealed Gyöngyi Szilágyi-Asztalos.
As it was revealed in the program, the University of Debrecen is participating in the program together with Eszterházy University in Eger and the University of Nyíregyháza. The government’s goal is to include these training and outcome requirements in the legal framework.
“One of the commitments of the program was to link higher and secondary education even more closely, so that as many secondary and primary school teachers as possible are involved in the training. This primarily happens during practice, and university lecturers also participate in partner schools where students do their training practice,” stated Péter Forisek.
From September, an innovation was also introduced in teacher training.
“Two institutions are authorized to organize such training in Hungary : one is the Education Office, the other is the National University of Public Service. These two institutions can also involve collaborators in organizing the training. The new training makes it mandatory for teachers to complete training in the given major every five years,” explained Péter Forisek.
In addition to Debrecen, Szolnok will also join this training, in which 420 teachers will participate.
