The “Adopt a Tree” Campaign was looking for adopters for newly planted saplings. The adoption scheme was open to residents of Debrecen, work communities and friendship groups who would like to plant a tree in a public space near their home or workplace and who undertake to take care of the tree, water it and monitor its condition during the 3-year adoption period.

The programme was launched last Thursday and applications were open until Wednesday evening. Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, Ákos Balázs, who is also responsible for environmental issues, announced on his Facebook page that 200 families, communities and friends of Debrecen had joined the movement.

The tree saplings will be provided and delivered to the site by the Municipality. The planting will be carried out jointly and Future of Debrecen will provide expert assistance.

Head of the green space department of the Mayor’s Office,  Orsolya Hamecz told Debrecen Television’s Evening Close-up programme that the aim was to enable residents to get closer to gardening and the trees they plant.

“This will also make these trees more successful in the long term, as residents can feel responsible for looking after them and watering them when they need it most, during the heatwaves,” she  stressed.
