University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Pharmacy Becomes Life Saving Point
To mark the occasion of Ambulance Day in Hungary, a modern defibrillator was handed over at the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Pharmacy on 10 May, enabling the institution to become the 50th official Life Saving Point in the region.
The modern semi-automatic defibrillator provides step-by-step spoken instructions on what to do if someone requires resuscitation. The device has been installed in the Faculty of Pharmacy’s main hall so that staff and students can assist anyone in distress if necessary. In emergency situations, every minute counts. “Every minute reduces the chance of successful resuscitation by 10 per cent. Therefore, people nearby who are willing and able to help have an enormous role and significance,” emphasised Ferenc Korcsmáros.
The building was inaugurated two years ago in the University of Debrecen Innovation Park. As it is located relatively far from the university clinics, the faculty leadership considered it important to have a modern defibrillator on site. “As the Faculty of Pharmacy, and fundamentally as part of the healthcare service sector, we must set an example. We must set an example for students and colleagues alike, and therefore we decided that we needed this device,” stressed Ildikó Bácskay.
The inauguration of the Life Saving Point was preceded by theoretical and practical training attended by around 30 university employees. “It takes time for ambulances to arrive at the scene, therefore the fate of a person in distress is often in the hands of bystanders and witnesses. That is why we place such emphasis on this life-saving mission — to train as many people as possible and to help both new and experienced participants acquire or refresh these skills,” pointed out Dávid Ménes.
The Faculty of Pharmacy is the fiftieth Life Saving Point in the region, with twenty-five located in Debrecen and the same number in other settlements across the county.
