Phase I of the Connection Between Main Roads No. 354 and 33 Is Progressing Well
Details of the development were presented on site by Mayor László Papp and Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs at a press briefing on 13 May 2026.
Mayor László Papp pointed out that a grade-separated junction is being constructed at the intersection of Domokos Márton Road and Main Road No. 354. As he explained, the industrial areas, the university’s innovation park, and commercial facilities on the western side of the city all justify significant infrastructure interventions.
“Our transport policy has an important objective: to carry out developments which, alongside the city’s existing road network, provide alternative transport corridors,” the Mayor stressed. He noted that, according to statistical data, Hungary’s vehicle fleet increased by 1.5 million between 2010 and 2025.
“Transport developments in Debrecen have now been progressing for ten years in line with a coherent strategy and concept. The city leadership recalled that, at the end of the 2010s, construction of Domokos Márton Road began northwards from the Füredi–Balmazújvárosi Road junction towards Vezér Road. The city implemented the project using TOP funding sources, and planning for the road’s further northern extension had already commenced at that stage. According to László Papp, this is particularly important because it will remove a substantial volume of traffic from Böszörményi Road, as this new 1.5-kilometre section will connect to the northern bypass via a grade-separated junction.
“The investment began in March 2025 and is progressing according to schedule. Under the contract, the completed development is to be handed over in November. At present, the bridge elements have already been lifted into place. Embankment construction, water infrastructure works, and preparation of the road foundations are under way, and I trust that motorists will be able to use this facility within a few months,” he said. He highlighted that, following the major grade-separated junction constructed on Main Road No. 33, this represents the city’s second major grade-separated junction development in this part of Debrecen. In his view, the investment, being implemented at a cost of HUF 7.93 billion, will undoubtedly have a highly positive and beneficial impact on the heavily trafficked roads in the area, particularly Böszörményi Road, Main Road No. 35, and transport in Józsa.
He explained that the heavy traffic travelling to and from Józsa currently passes through Elek Street and Rózsavölgyi Street, as these provide access to the motorway. However, the junction already completed there places a considerable burden on these streets, and therefore traffic arrangements on those roads will be reviewed once this new junction opens. László Papp added that further developments affecting Józsa and the northern part of the city are also under way. He recalled that planning is in progress for widening Main Road No. 35 to a dual carriageway, while the licensing and construction plans for the northern Józsa bypass have also been completed, which in future would further reduce the heavy traffic burden on Józsa.
Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs spoke about how traffic counts were carried out when the bypass road feasibility study was prepared, and transport experts clearly concluded that traffic needed to be distributed more evenly. He pointed out that 12,000 vehicles travel daily between Józsa and Debrecen alone, with a further 10,000 vehicles arriving from the direction of Hajdúböszörmény.
The Deputy Mayor explained that this was why a bypass road had been proposed, providing an opportunity for both residents of Józsa and Hajdúböszörmény to access the motorway and then approach the city from another entry point into Debrecen. He added that this also underlined the importance of constructing the dual carriageway, as it would enable safe travel conditions between Debrecen and Józsa.
“The main problem during the morning peak period is the extremely heavy traffic load on Böszörményi Road, and this is why the significance of this road is so great. It will make it possible to relieve congestion on Böszörményi Road, improve the capacity to accommodate vehicles arriving from Józsa along Main Road No. 35, and provide motorists with an alternative bypass route,” he explained. He added that nowadays the shortest route is not always the quickest way to reach a destination, and that the city has made enormous progress in this respect in recent years and will continue to do so in the future.
