Parliament Discusses When Semcorp May Resume Operations
It was stated in Parliament that Semcorp will not carry out any activities until it has fully complied with all the conditions required by law. The ban on its operations will remain in force until the factory has completed all remediation work.
During a parliamentary session, MP for Debrecen Zsolt Tárkányi questioned the Ministry of Rural Affairs and Regional Development as the overseer of government offices on the Semcorp case. “The concerns of the people of Debrecen are unfortunately well founded, as the authorities ordered the closure of the Semcorp factory last week. Under the law, they had no alternative since the level of contamination released into the soil by the company was 13,000 times higher than the permitted limit,” the Tisza Party MP told Parliament.
Zsolt Tárkányi asked the State Secretary at the Ministry of Rural Affairs and Regional Development to provide information for the residents of Debrecen. Péter Stumpf stated that Semcorp would not carry out any activities until it had fully complied with all legal requirements. He added that the Tisza government strictly monitors compliance with regulations at all industrial facilities, and that no plant posing a risk to the health of the Hungarian people would be allowed to operate. “The prohibition will remain in force until the factory has completed the entire remediation process. The company will of course be required to bear all associated costs and to remedy the identified deficiencies,” the State Secretary said.
The Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters has launched an investigation on suspicion of environmental damage in connection with Semcorp’s battery separator film factory after the Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office ordered the immediate suspension of the company’s operations, citing serious breaches of environmental protection and fire safety regulations, according to 24.hu. The criminal complaint was filed by Mayor László Papp.
