University of Debrecen Remains Among Most Popular Higher Education Institutions in Hungary
At the university admissions results event held on ELTE’s Lágymányos Campus in Budapest, Sándor Katz, State Secretary for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education and Children’s Affairs, said that more than 140,000 applicants had applied for a course through the general admissions procedure this year, and almost three-quarters of them were admitted. According to his information, in the academic year beginning in September, eight out of ten students will be able to commence their studies with state funding. A total of 62,659 students will study full-time, while 38,913 will be enrolled in some form of part-time programme. Sándor Katz stated that student numbers have increased at every level of higher education, not only in undergraduate programmes but also in master’s and undivided degree programmes.
The most popular fields of study this year are business and economics, followed by teacher training, engineering, humanities and information technology. The State Secretary described it as encouraging that teacher training has experienced significant growth in recent years. This year, 16,199 students were admitted to this field of study, while primary teacher training and undivided teacher education programmes will welcome a record number of students. The State Secretary added that an increasing number of students are entering higher education from vocational training, although the majority continue to come from grammar schools.
The largest number of students will begin their studies at ELTE, with the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged and the University of Pécs immediately following the Budapest institution in the rankings. The highest admissions score this year was required for Corvinus University’s English-language International Business programme (477 points), followed by ELTE’s Law programme and the Law programme at PPKE (both requiring 467 points).
Renáta Vanó, Deputy President for Higher Education at the Educational Authority (OH), emphasised that this result was achieved through joint efforts. “In recent weeks, the ministry, higher education institutions and the Educational Authority have worked and reflected together, listening to one another and building this achievement collaboratively. Its success is evident not only in the figures but also in the quality,” she said. The Deputy President added that the supplementary admissions process will also take place this year and will be announced on 30 July.
Students who were not admitted during the current admissions round or who did not submit an application by February are eligible to apply through supplementary admissions. Applications for the supplementary process may be submitted until 7 August, and the admissions thresholds will be announced on 27 August.
