Exhibition “Outstanding Objects” in MODEM

MODEM art center 1-3 Hunyadi János Street, Debrecen, Hungary

The exhibition, organised around issues of urban locality, is realised in the cooperation between Modem and the Ferenczy Museum Center in Szentendre.   At MODEM, two communities from Debrecen participated in the project, and their works will be displayed in two consecutive exhibitions. The current exhibition was created in cooperation with the University of Debrecen as part of an elective course. During the semester, different institutions’ critiques of art projects were primarily explored and discussed with the students, including how they relate to Debrecen and the city's role in their identity. Finally, based on important aspects, three pieces of art were selected and, together with the artists, discussed the backstory of the given works and their possible interpretations.  The central element of the exhibition is a stylised Debrecen map, on which the locations of the objects selected by the students are marked. Due to the exhibition's unique approach and focus on urban localities, visitors are guaranteed to have an enjoyable and exciting experience.   Entry to the exhibition is free. Participating students in the project: Csige Cintia / Faitli Zoltán / Gajdos Boglárka / Györgyi Kata / Hartyányi Panna / Kegyes Lilla / Kiss Tamás / Kosina Dávid / Kulcsár Kevin / […]

Border Age – Exhibition by Zoltán Fátyol and István Tamus

MODEM art center 1-3 Hunyadi János Street, Debrecen, Hungary

The exhibition Border Age celebrates the 70th birthdays of two artists from Debrecen, visual artist Zoltán Fátyol and graphic artist István Tamus, by bringing together works from the advanced stages of their careers. “Border age” refers to a period marking a complex transition process between eras that have gained stability based on their own order as well as a transition that forms a bridge between the past, which is considered to be outdated, and the future, with a gesture of moving forward. This exhibition of major local artists at MODEM is not intended to be a complete overview of their oeuvres, but it aims to provide insight into the dominant themes, motifs and technical experiments that have defined the careers of these two artists, who have different temperaments. Japan-Themed Exhibition Opened in Debrecen

Borbarát Bar Gallery Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca 4., Debrecen, Hungary

Exhibition titled ‘Tojama, before the earthquake’ opened in the Egri Borbarát (Friends of Wine) Bar Gallery on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street on the 11th of January. The colourful exotic landscapes and genre pictures selected by the curator János Tóth are award-winning works by Tojama County photographers. Several of the creators have participated in artist camps in Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar County over the past decades. The exhibition was opened by István Pinczés, the artistic director of the Tojama Association, and was guided by personal memories. (The Jászai Mari and Uchimura award-winning director visited the landscapes shown in the pictures 70 times in 40 years.) Members of the performing arts section of the Tojama Association also participated in the opening. With the exhibition, on the initiative of the owner István Kovács, the organisers commemorate the victims of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the west coast of Japan in the first days of the year, when a total of more than 400 earthquakes and aftershocks devastated the region over the course of several days, resulting in nearly 80 deaths. The epicentre of the second strongest earthquake in the history of Japan was about 80 kilometres northwest of the city of Toyama. The exhibition can […]

The Fictures Photo Exhibition Opens for the First Time in Debrecen

New Gallery (Új Galéria) 1 Széchenyi Street, Debrecen, Hungary

The opening of the photo exhibition "Fictures" will take place on Friday, on the 12nd of January at 5 p.m. in the Új Gallery. At the exhibition, the images from the photo album Fictures, published in 2021, can be seen for the first time in Debrecen. The recordings were made by Tamás Varga, and the accompanying texts were written by Árpád Burai. Regarding the material of the exhibition, the creators formulated the following thoughts in advance: ‘On the walls special people can be seen, next to them important events in their lives are expressed in text form. Human representation and caption.’ The archaic technique strongly connected to the material world (recordings were made on wet collodion and gelatine dry plates) strengthens the feeling of the present, the real, the having happened. The false image has also often appeared in the history of photography, and it still appears today. The images push the boundaries of the much-heard concept of reality representation - as an uncertain expression of the media - and its meaning. The images appearing in various written or digital media together with the recipient create a kind of alternative reality, the authenticity of which is questionable… At the opening […]

I collected my previous works, which are wooden, carved, painted sets and altars  from various public institutions and private individuals. On the one hand, the colours are the different reflections and refractions of light, and on the other hand, the world of motifs visible in the works is drawn from Hungarian folk tales and their lessons, ’ he said. Among other things, the movable puppet wall of the puppet group Báb-Kincs-Tár from Létavértes and the scenery of the Aranyszalma Folk Dance Ensemble from Hajdúnánás will also be on display at the exhibition. In addition to these, two smaller, relief-carved and painted wing altars can be viewed, which were  offered by private individuals for the duration of the exhibition. Exhibition leading visitors to a strange world opened

Kölcsey Center Bethlen u., 4026, Debrecen, Hungary

The Bényi Gallery prepared the next exhibition season during the holidays, so in January, the works of Emese Bács, a creator well known for her unvarnished honesty, will be displayed on the gallery's walls and exhibition space. The exhibition titled ‘Silently observing, subjectively forming ... ’ was opened on the 18th of January at 6 pm in the Kölcsey Center, where the artist and the guests were greeted by Art Writer Réka Fazakas and Gallery Manager Andrea Szalai. ‘The exhibition titled ‘Silently observing, subjectively forming ... ’, located in the exhibition space of the Bényi Gallery in Debrecen, leads to a strange world. Some of the urban spaces that can be seen in the paintings of Emese Bács are clearly connected to the artist's chosen homeland, Budapest, or her hometown, in Brasov Transylvania. The figures she depicts become more important than depicting urban locations, skylines or Marc Augé's so-called non-places, temporary locations connected to public transport. The figures always reflect characteristic, often stale states of being, age imprints, since they are not individuals, but typical types of people who are often lonely, immersed in their own virtual world. ‘Emese Bács always carefully observes the figures waiting or sitting on the […]

Exhibition of works by art teachers in Tócóskert

Medgyessy Ferenc Gimnázium Holló László stny. 6, Debrecen

An exhibition of works by art teachers from Debrecen will open soon in Tócóskert. The title is peculiar, but the location is familiar. The exhibition opens on the 9th of February and will run until the end of the month, the 29th of  February. As Károly Szabó, the art teacher of the Medgyessy High School, tells there is a bit of playfulness and, of course, information in the title of the exhibition opening in the  Medgyessy High School’s  Gallery at Angyalföld Square 7, which looks like this: 24209229. The first two digits are the year, followed by the month and the day.  The event is important for students and teachers alike. As the head of the institution, József Fekete, recalls, several projects have already been launched in the past in the spirit of ‘Master and Disciple’, and this kind of spirit will be present here too, although this time the exhibition space will be filled with the works of the art teachers.  In the case of the works, both colleagues and students have tried not to stop where the work is born, but to give the visitor more information, which brings them closer to the birth and interpretation of the […]
