Minister of Transport Speaks on Railway Upgrades Planned for Debrecen
In a recent interview, Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy told ATV that work on improving the railway infrastructure will continue, with the refurbishment of the leaking underpass and the installation of lifts to improve accessibility set to begin this year, followed by a full renovation of the station.
A segment of the interview was shared on Facebook by Zsolt Tárkányi, Tisza Party MP for Debrecen and Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Investment, who emphasised the importance of railway development, highlighting the plans affecting Debrecen.
Dávid Vitézy addressed the former railway line 106, which runs south from Debrecen. “This was a successful and well-functioning suburban railway line for Debrecen, used by many for commuting. A Chinese battery factory was established there and, since it was in the way, the previous government closed the line and removed the tracks. Fortunately, the sale of the land was prevented in time, and I hope that rail services on this line can be restored as soon as possible,” he said.
The minister also spoke about the future of the Transport Museum, which in his view belongs in Budapest, while in Debrecen the focus should be on developments that directly serve the needs of local residents. As an example, he mentioned the modernisation of Debrecen’s main railway station. “In Debrecen, we should focus on what matters to the people of Debrecen: the Main Railway Station. With a quick intervention, we will begin repairing the leaking underpass this year and install lifts to ensure accessibility, followed by a full reconstruction of the station,” Dávid Vitézy stated.
