Over 1,000 Take Part in “Move, Debrecen!” Dance Flashmob on Kossuth Square
The “Move, Debrecen!” initiative organises joyful, community-building physical activity events that are well-liked and popular among all age groups. In this spirit, the highly successful “Move, Debrecen!” flashmob event was held for the fourth time, on International Dance Day, as part of the 2nd Debrecen Dance Week.
Numerous dance groups and associations from Debrecen, interested students from educational institutions, and citizens participating in the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative gathered in Kossuth Square on 29 April 2026. As part of the flashmob, following a dance performance featuring two choreographies by the “Move, Debrecen!” senior joy dance group, the more than 1,100 participants who had registered in advance performed a specially created routine, followed by two earlier choreographies and even an encore.
The idea for the flashmob was conceived by József Asztalos, recipient of the Alfréd Hajós Award of the City of Debrecen and a physical education teacher, while the choreographies were created by Szabolcs Jóna, dance teacher at Ady Endre Grammar School, and Henriett Henzsel, instructor at the No Comment hip-hop dance school. The leader and choreographer of the senior joy dance group is Márta Virágos.
At the beginning of the event, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles thanked the work of Szabolcs Jóna and Márta Virágos with a symbolic gift package on behalf of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative.
As the Deputy Mayor said in connection with the flashmob, Debrecen celebrates dance not only on International Dance Day—29 April—but throughout the entire week, as dance is not only part of culture but also a serious sport. Dance provides an opportunity for both young and older people to stay active and maintain good physical condition. This flashmob is also an opportunity to showcase the diversity of dance culture in Debrecen, how many people practise it and in how many different forms—in dance ensembles, sports and dance associations, and schools, often at a professional level. It also demonstrates, through this fourth flashmob, that the people living here are always ready to cooperate and join forces, because: This is Debrecen!
